Exactly. The ones that use the donations to give themselves raises and build themselves nicer offices.
Anyone who would like to help a specific wounded soldier, say, LT Dennis Skelton who is at Walter Reed now for surgeries to repair severe left arm and left leg injuries suffered at Fallujah (he also lost his left eye), FReepmail me.
I'm not fond of the Red Cross either. My uncle told me that during WWII he was able to make to an aid station and the Red Cross was there with Cokes and snacks. He took one and they actually asked him to pay for it! He said that they asked for a nickel, he told them he spent all day fighting Germans and didn't have time to stop at the bank. Since then he never supported the Red Cross. He said the Salvation Army would gladly give the GIs what they needed but not the Red Cross. OMT, Chaplains usually accept donations for the soldiers. I'd send donations directly to the hospital. There's also a group called Fisher House which offers hospitality to families of wounded at Walter Reed. They'd be good to support, and I believe donations to them are tax deductable.
I have begun making monthly contributions to an exceptionally worthy foundation.
Thanks...I bought a dozen phone cards yesterday. This was good info.
I'm not a big fan of the RED CROSS but they are doing something for the wounded at least. If you can name another organization that does things directly for the soldier, let me know. Fisher House is a good thing for the families but I want my donations to go to the wounded.
I just made a donation to Fisher House.

God bless our troops and their families.
Bookmarking for later today.
will forward this to all the patriots in my address book...
thanks
No one does. No one should.
I would suggest donations be sent TO Walter Reed, in care of the hospital, etc., bypassing the Red Cross entirely. For that to work however, and given security considerations, it would take a point man to handle the packages. And that would be the name on the address. Maybe somebody could contact folks, there, and see if there are any volunteers. Then those who don't want to send ANYTHING to a Red Cross address can still send needed items directly to those in need.
I agree with your suggestion. But with security problems, etc., a point person or group is needed for clearing the packages and making sure the RATs haven't sent any nastygrams to our soldiers there.
Not all Red Cross volunteers are like the European versions though in my opinion. I'd never give them money anymore because of my fear that it would be forwarded to the International group or Red Crescent but phone cards that only can be used in America and other gift items are okay, I think. But that's just me.
If you would care to send phone cards, the adress is:
Medical Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20307-5001
I may be wrong but aren't our wounded Marines there?
I'm afraid I don't know the answer. I thought all the wounded were taken to Walter Reed but that's an Army hospital so you are probably right. Are you from that area? If you are, I'm sure lots of Freepers would prefer to send items to people who would make sure our wounded warriors get the items.
Someone sent me one name at Walter Reed but my other gifts won't have names.
I have 12 phone cards of 100 minutes that I'll be sending. I'm debating on whether to send them to the Red Cross at Walter Reed or the Medical Family Assistance Center. Maybe they are one and the same?
