China: New Class of ICBM capable Subs
World Net Daily ^ | 12-5-04 | AP

China has launched the first submarine in a new class of nuclear subs designed to fire intercontinental ballistic missiles, U.S. defense officials said.

The submarine is, at a minimum, months away from having missiles installed and going on a cruise, one official said Friday, discussing foreign weapons developments only on the condition of anonymity. Still, it is further evidence of China's intentions to expand both its nuclear weapons and submarine forces, officials say.

It was widely known that China was building the new class of nuclear-missile submarine, called the "Type 094," but the launch is far ahead of what U.S. intelligence expected, one official said. The Chinese military has also been developing a new class of submarine launched ballistic missile, called the JL-2, that is expected to have a range in excess of 4,600 miles. The Type 094 submarine would carry these missiles, but it is not clear whether the missiles are ready for deployment.

Interesting.

It goes on to mention that the U.S. is far ahead in Cloaking and detection systems.

Until American security laxity allows them to steal this too!

Gack!

I wonder if this has anything to do with the story a couple of months ago when a Chinese sub was detected in Japanese waters? Interesting...

Definitely probing and learning. I think I read they may have been mapping the sea bed for fast ingress egress routes. And the Chinese learn fast.

Japan, ROK, and Taiwan had better enter the playing field exponentially to their present capabilities. Australia too!

I Don't like news like this.

At least as a Communist economy, they were too poor to be developing first-rate military capabilities.

I wonder how far behind our intelligence is on Iran's nuclear activities?

But this one is bad enough. China is a vile Communist power that is growing wealthy and more aggressive. Why we continue to send our industrial wealth and further dig ourselves into debt to such a repugnant regime is simply beyond my fathom.

Ain't it the truth!

Stalin [then] The United States will sell us the rope to hang them.

China [now] We'll sell the U.S. the rope by which we'll hang them.

For several years I worried the lack of need was going to cause the US to degrade it's own sub fleet and cease innovations. Now I like to think this is not the case.

"but the launch is far ahead of what U.S. intelligence expected"

I pray that this is about the media's knowledge. I hope that the military IS on top of everything.

China's subs have to be quietly hunted and sunk. No way should the US be under the gun again. Obviously that will take a while to do. Meantime, Iran needs a regime change. For reasons other than nuclear weapons, so does Syria and Saudi Arabia.

When the type 094 sails, the US Navy will know the name of the captain, his home town and the names of his children.
