MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The discovery of a tomb filled with decapitated bodies suggests Mexico's 2,000 year-old "Pyramid of the Moon" may have been the site of horrifically gory sacrifices, archeologists said on Thursday.
The tomb at Teotihuacan, the first major city built in the Americas, whose origins are one of history's great mysteries, also held the bound carcasses of eagles, dogs and other animals.
"It is hard to believe that the ritual consisted of clean, symbolic performances -- it is most likely that the ceremony created a horrible scene of bloodshed with sacrificed people and animals," said Saburo Sugiyama, one of the scientists leading the ongoing dig.
"Whether the victims and animals were killed at the site or a nearby place, this foundation ritual must have been one of the most terrifying acts recorded archeologically in Mesoamerica."
Of the 12 human bodies found, 10 were decapitated and then tossed, rather than arranged, on one side of the burial site. The two other bodies were richly ornamented with beads and a necklace made of imitation human jaws.

You're thinking of the Tenotichitlan (present day downtown Mexico City) pyramid. When Cortés arrived, Teotihuacán had been abandoned for nearly 1500 years, and was mostly covered with brush. I don't think he ever saw the place. Excavation only started in the late 19th century.

At least they weren't found with panties on their heads. . .now THAT really would have been horrific. We don't know that. The article doesn't mention finding any heads... Now if they did find some petrified head panties how would the media spin it? Pre-Columbian religious rites are usually held in high esteem as uncorrupted by the Western culture by the left. Michael Moore might have to blame Halliburton's time machine for the end of the Toltecs.

"Yikes; I stand corrected. I thought the muslims were the most murderous subhuman filth. But I'm wrong. Seems though, the lowlife subhuman murderous muslim garbage do it out of pleasure via the pigshit koran, while the Aztecs... I'm not sure why they did it. Need to do some research..."In this case one size really does fit all.
[Aztec/Aztlan....go figure!]

I've always wanted to climb them, though Palenque (a Mayan site) is the one site in all Latin America I would most like to visit. I suppose it doesn't have to be an either/or thing though.

Correct, this just can't be! The Ancients were so much more loving, and giving, and in tune with the cosmos, and connectd with Gaia, the Earth Mother, and enlightened...
You realize what this means, don't you? It means George W. Bush, who is an idiot but also incredibly crafty, must now have a time machine and have gone into the past to destroy ancient, peace loving cultures, only to help Haliburton steal the oil that was under the Temple! The very fact that there is no oil there today proves that he stole it in the past! (Along with Elvis. And Nixon.)

That's interesting news. Even though I have an avid interest in history, I've largely ignored the history of the Aztecs, Mayans, and other civilizations of the western hemisphere. My dad gave me his high school history book, circa 1945, and of COURSE those cultures would be ignored. What did they possibly contribute to Western Culture, other than providing natural resources for the Engine of the Economy?
I sure miss the days before Liberal Angst, when we knew America was put here by God to be an example to the world, and that we were the pinnacle of civilization. (Don't take this for sarcasm. I think the book is right.)

Coincidence that the civilization that built Teotihuacan fell apart right around the time Mohammed burst on the scene in Mecca and Medina?
I think not!

Oh No, now you've done it. You have just given Mikey Moore his next movie script.

I climbed the temple at Xunantunich in Belize just a week ago, it cleared up a lot about the human sacrifice aspect of the Mayan religion.
It was nearly 100 degrees and humid when we arrived at the top, and when that guide said "OK, everybody down" I told him just to kill me and leave me there.

"Mexico's 2,000 year-old 'Pyramid of the Moon' may have been the site of horrifically gory sacrifice" -- whaaaat?!?!? Call Sixty Minutes! ;')
This structure is (today) attributed to the Toltecs. According to the Spanish, the Aztecs had no accurate idea of who built the complex. Bernal Diaz records that a dramatic getaway resulted from a lucky shot as a battle was about to begin at the site, during the retreat of Cortez back to the coast after their harrowing escape from Tenochtitlan.
Speakin' of which... there was a structure in Tenochtitlan that ran nearly the length of the great plaza, and which the Aztecs referred to as "the corncrib". It was filled with human heads, untold thousands of them, and near the end of its existence, some of those heads were from recently deceased members of Cortez' expedition.
Aztec society was (like its predecessors in MesoAmerica) bloodthirsty to a degree seldom seen anywhere in world history (prior to the rise of the Marxist-Leninist culture). It must have been lousy with PTSD cases.
