Washington, DC The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., today welcomed President Bushs nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed John Ashcroft as Attorney General. If confirmed, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic ever to serve as Attorney General.
We are very encouraged by the Gonzales nomination. We previously criticized the Bush Administration for not having an Hispanic in the cabinet since the departure of former HUD Secretary, now Senator-elect, Mel Martinez. We are pleased that one of the first acts since the Presidents reelection both rectifies that situation and marks an historic milestone for the Latino community. Never before has an Hispanic served as head of one of the four major cabinet posts Secretary of State, Treasury, Defense, and Attorney General, stated Janet Murguia, NCLR Executive Director and COO.
Murguia also noted Gonzales ties to the Hispanic community throughout his career. Alberto Gonzales served with distinction on the board of directors of one of NCLRs oldest and most respected affiliates, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) in Houston, Texas. Moreover, during his tenure as White House Counsel, he has been one of the most accessible members of the White House staff to NCLR and other Hispanic organizations, added Murguia.
Murguia concluded, We acknowledge that this is the first step of a long confirmation process that requires that his record be fully examined. That being said, Gonzales is a thoughtful, reasonable public servant, a man of his word, and we have every expectation that his nomination will be very well received in the Latino community.
Who cares whether "La Raza" endorses Gonzales.
What does that have to do with anything?
It would be good to hear the AG tell the people how he really feels about the hate group La Raza....
or maybe not.....
Am I dealing with a nut here? I ask sincerely.
No more illegal alien apologist from Texas. We have one too many!
The country can not endure this endless flood.
Why would we care if he was?
Showing your irrational fear again janet?
Alberto Gonzales is an American, born in America.
How can he be Mexican?
I guess in your world, not even being legally born in the US makes you an American if your surname is Hispanic.
It's the very pinnacle of hypocrisy.
That seems to be the plan, and it will be aided by the Bush-approved invasion of America by millions of Mexican illegal aliens, who President Bush claims are conservatives.
Maybe Bush should also appoint a Communist to his cabinet. That would really shut the liberals up.
Let's see...
These guys have no clue on where he stands on the issue, but you are calling him an "illegal alien apologist" simply based on his surname and ethnicity...
You just keep proving me right about you.
MALDEF(Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) Responds to Likely Nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to the Position of Attorney GeneralFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 10, 2004Rachel Estrada
(202) 293-2828, ext. 19(Washington, D.C.) MALDEF, the nation's premier Latino civil rights organization, released a statement today regarding the likely nomination of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales to the Cabinet post of Attorney General. Below is the statement released today by Ann Marie Tallman, MALDEF President and General Counsel.
"If confirmed as Attorney General, The Honorable Alberto R. Gonzales would be the first Latino to hold this important Cabinet position. MALDEF is encouraged by President Bush's interest in making this historic appointment, however, MALDEF believes it is important to evaluate each candidate in their totality, regardless of race or ethnicity.
We are currently proceeding with a comprehensive evaluation of Judge Gonzales' record. More information will be made available during the confirmation process that will further inform the public about Mr. Gonzales' views and positions on key civil liberties and civil rights issues.
MALDEF's core mission is to protect and promote the civil rights for the over 40 million Latinos living in the United States. We are profoundly concerned about all aspects of the Attorney General's responsibilities, not only its enforcement and prosecutorial duties but also important due process questions, including right to counsel.
"It has yet to be seen whether or not Gonzales would be the best fit for our community but we are encouraged by this development," said MALDEF President and General Counsel Ann Marie Tallman.
You should try judging people on their merits Joey.
Gonzales is not pro-abort.
In about 12 years, it would be no surprise at all to see Bush's nephew running for President with Gonzalez running on the VP ticket.
By 2014, there will be about 55 million illegal aliens in our country. By then our borders will have been all but undermined, and our sovereignty with be a thing of the past. America will be no more.
Photo of President Bush's nephew while campaigning for the President while in Mexico last August.
Is there something about the photo which makes him less thn American?
While we're at it, let's show the photo in its original context, shall we?
Bush nephew campaigns in MexicoMEXICO CITY (AP) President Bush's young, Hispanic nephew and his bride are on the campaign trail in Mexico, where they are joining the increasingly vigorous battle for the votes of 1 million U.S. citizens living south of the border.
George Prescott Bush whose father is Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and mother, Columba, is originally from Mexico arrived late Friday for a four-day tour in support of his uncle's re-election campaign. The trip was paid for by the political nonprofit Republicans Abroad.
So, he was doing something wrong in campaigning for the votes of one million U.S. citizens living in Mexico?
There are over 1 million U.S. citizens residing in Mexico. It made perfect sense to send George P. to represent W in soliciting their votes. Kerry had an active campaign in Mexico too for the same vote base.
The photo is part of Joey's prior post.
That was a sloppy mistake Joey.
Luis, I think the saying "cada loco con su tema" applies to some here. I'm sorry I don't have a translation for it. I've tried, but nothing really works trying to put it into English. It loses something in the translation. I guess it's a pure Latin "thing" (saying).
See post #12. My name is not Joey. I have no problems with this issue. As you can see in post #12, I was being sarcastic.
It depends how you interpret some of his legal decisions while he was a judge in Texas. I've seen both arguments. And I've also been stung too often by candidates who proved to be pro-abort after they got on the court. I would love to be proved wrong on this, but those earlier decisions are worrying.
No, but he was absolutely wrong when he told a Mexican crowd that the actions of our Border Patrol trying to keep illegal aliens from "migrating" are "reprehensible".
