Somebody commented on the blog site that this essay is so good why is the blogger giving it away for free. I believe that if I wrote something this well, I would want everyone to see it.
This is crisp, knowledgeable, hysterical writing. so funny and so right. Enjoy.
You almost had me.
I adored the Iowa 80 reference, though. It is the world's biggest truckstop.
Are you a transplant or do you have salt water in your veins?
Gorgeous, you say...
:)
Transplanted Arizonans. State acted a little too blue for us.
Can somebody email the link to KJL at The Corner? (I can't with this connection.) She'll probably link to it. It reads just like a New York Times piece. Even the length. Unlike a New York Times piece, I wanted to read it.
Don't worry, I left my home side of the tracks when my husband walked out on us ten years ago and I had to learn how to use a circular saw. Anyway, since I'd been around horses from infancy I always knew how to shoot, drive a truck, or run a baler. Now I know how to do plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work too. So I am not a totally spoiled suburban lady.
The operative word there is "sixteen," not "gorgeous." Consult the Maryland State Statutes on Children and Family Law for further information.
You sound like one well rounded lady. And I mean that in the nicest way.. Glad to meet you.
That's not far from reality. The Wife, toddler, and I dropped by nearby Sidwell Friends School (Wisconsin Ave, NW Washington DC) about two months ago for some sort of craft/food sale thing they were having.
All of the food sales were divided up among the various ethnic-identity clubs. There was the African-American Student Club's Hamburger stand, the Jewish Student's Club baked good table, Hispanic Student Club's beverage stand, etc.
While we were strolling through some young girls approached selling copies of "Bush on the Couch", some kind of anti-W screed. They explained they were raising money to go to Pennsylvannia to "help get out the vote for Kerry".
Needless to say there was also a Sidwell Friends for Kerry booth and Kerry buttons were all over the place.
Sixteen? Didn't see that. Did you put that down? I didn't see it. Hmmm...
Hillarious! A delicious read indeed!
I promise to read this in the morning.
Marking my place...
too full to do anything but sleep. :)

"....others are grateful for us and our peculiar regional chauvinism"
As onyx says...
The South is saving the Union. ;o)
