Lost an Old Friend Today. Politics and the Personal
11.24.04 | mlmr

Posted on 11/24/2004 2:42:43 PM PST by mlmr

I lost an old friend today. No, she didn't die. She screamed at me for my many-year metmorphisis from rad-liberal to conservative. She doesn't understand why I have changed, and is unable to listen because she is filled with bile, anger and hate. She wishes Bush evil and hates US policy. She has turned into a Michal Moore robot.

We have not been close friends for many years but I did enjoy keeping in touch. Because of our thirty year history I have treated the friendship gingerly but with great fondness.

Politics is hell.

I agree with you. Evil conservatives....they almost shrink from us.

After I calmed down, I realized that I was the one who changed, who grew, learned, cared enough about the nation to inform myself about the issues and the candidates. He is the one stuck in a reactionary mode, confident in his own little echo chamber that he holds the patent on knowledge and understanding. I used to respect him; I no longer do.

Wow. That is the kernel, the nugget! We are different. For those of us who have changed...

I just can't think of the psychological terminology right now.

I'll bet you never dreamed this thread would go to almost 300 replies? It could go to 1000 when the post-Thanksgiving horror stories start coming in.

No, I didn't but I am going to keep it bumped throughout the weekend. I think we will hear from the post-Thanksgiving dinner Freepers.

Thanks!

When you weed out the whining liberal losers from your life, it leaves you with more time for your family and good friends.

Whining liberal losers are the worse thieves. They steal the one thing that you can never regain, your time.

There are millions and millions of the boomer red diaper babies as Savage has labeled them.

They wake up hating America, Christians, and morality and show that hatred throughout the day. Then they go to sleep with the same hatred.

They turned out in mass to vote for their poster boy, the traitor Kerry.

I don't think my parents hate America. I do think they are seriously misled and wrong about what is best for the country.

You get hateful e-mails and you still associate with them, even calling some "friends"?

I am getting older, and friendship is dear

A friend would accept you as you are. I have a liberal college buddy and we are still friends. We trade jabs, but we know that politically we will never be on the same page. But he is adult enought to accept it, so am I.

On the bright side, my wife has met some really wonderful older ladies at our church and now they are best of buddies. The age difference does not really seem to matter. (wife is 30, I am 38). You would be surprised how a friendly gesture and opening your heart at church can allow others to latch on to you. We all need friends ya know.

he's not the kind of lib that has driven so many from the Dem ranks, nor the type who has created the current discord.

Yes, I did notice. That doesn't change DPM's status as a liberal - he wore the label proudly. Frankly, I don't see many postings to FR which differentiate between "types" of liberals. Perhaps we need to establish some form of taxonomy for our discussions of "political animals".

More to the point, my comments have been in response to the broad contention that "liberals can't be smart" and that I therefore need to become acquainted with a "smarter" crowd. I can certainly cite others (e.g, Gore Vidal) who are (a) more to the left than DPM, (b) extremely intelligent, and c) very much putting their $.02 into "the current discord." My two dear friends would also fall in this category; we do ourselves a disservice by assuming that anyone who holds "liberal/progressive" views is by definition not smart. It is the ideas, principles, and approaches that we are discussing and debating, not the people. That's why I'm waiting to talk with Sis - she matters far more to me than her political views.

It could go to 1000 when the post-Thanksgiving horror stories start coming in.

My side of the family is quite liberal (see other entries on this thread), but I'm spending Thanksgiving with my wife's very conservative family. I'm taking along a few recent printouts from FR, NRO, WSJ, and Hugh Hewitt for "Herself's" family to read and enjoy. I'll be calling some on my side (Mom, particularly) to wish them well and I hope to have some good news to help balance the "horror".

Well, gotta get ready and get on the road. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

The scary thing is the group is well educated and very affluent. If you spoke to them on line in the supermarket, you'd think they were perfectly sane. What they really are is hate-filled, I guess. At their mildest, they have a grudge against people who practice the orthodox version of any religion (particularly Christianity); at their worst, they're like the ranting wacko who emailed back about people like me who "believe in God/Dog", even though I hadn't even mentioned religion.

I identify with your back and forth with your friend.
For me, it is a sister.
She has been in academia all her adult life and has the requisite liberal credentials to prove it.
As things have heated up between the two halves of the country over the last six years or so, I knew that we didn't see eye-to-eye on political or even cultural issues. Since we didn't generally discuss politics it was possible to "let that sleeping dog lie."
This year was different tho'.
She started slamming my e-mail box with anti-Bush stuff that got progressively (a little word play here) more malicious.
I wrote an e-mail in response, NOT intending to send it but just getting some stuff out of my head so I wouldn't ruminate about it for several days. My son, 22, came in the room about then and, after talking about it a bit, he challenged me to send it. So I did...
It didn't take her long to respond.
She wasn't looking for an argument so much as she seemed to want to bombard me with her liberal "truths" and engage in a back and forth debate (her pc term, "conversation".)
I shut that down right away. If you knew my sister you would understand that it would be one of those circular arguments that would never change any minds. When she said we should "talk", she said she feels shut out and isolated from family. This is somewhat true.
Her thinking on so many levels is so far 'out-there', that family members tend to get involved with her only on a surface, peripheral level. If you go any deeper than that it just gets uncomfortable for all. In fact, on two occassions she ended up in screaming matches with other siblings that looked like they were headed for fisticuffs. At the time (10 and 12 years ago, respectively,) I couldn't fathom why her reaction was so extreme to what, to me and other family members, seemed to be innocent remarks. Further, the comments weren't even directed at her specifically.
In hindsight I know that what was being discussed struck a chord with her liberal mindset and she perceived what was said to be a personal attack. No matter her thinking; her reaction was frightening. The behavior was exactly what we see so often in liberals: anger, accusations, raising your voice to drown out any opposing view and using physical intimidation with the clear implication that the next step would be violence.
Now, with the political cat "out-of-the-bag", there is no more sort of pretending that we don't have these extreme differences in views. I know it will color all get-togethers with her going forward...
All this to say, "You are not alone."

many of my nearest and dearest, and oldest, friends are still liberal .. I don't understand it because they are all very bright people, successful, degreed and pedigreed.
Even the smartest among us may simply choose to wear blinders and refuse to see the changes going on around us politically. As noted throughout, the Democrat Party is NOT 'your father's Democrat Party.'

Rather than lose the friendship, we steer clear of political discussion .. no one wins with that one, and until they start threatening to leave the country, we can 'all just get along.'

A former colleague once spoke of her grandmother who was a Democrat. When asked why, granny said, "because I believe in democracy!"

I've had Dem friends tell me congratulations for your President, to which I had to respond, he's President for all of us.

They don't understand, but I believe these are the misguided variety, not the evil-incarnate kind. They'll come around. I'll keep working, they will be assimilated, resistance is futile...

I agree with you that is why this has been so painful. This woman was a dear and close friend. Altough we have taken very different paths, I still respected our history and sidestepped our differences. So when she told me essentially that she was not able to understand me or what I had become (It was after the hair sprouted that I realized that I was Godzilla!) I was shocked.
