Like a cloud no bigger than a man's hand, the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution is gathering on the political horizon.
No, it's not the anti-same-sex amendment that President Bush supports. Only if the Supreme Court strikes down the federal Defense of Marriage Act - or if it overturns the changes in state constitutions adopted to block recognition of same-sex marriages legal elsewhere - will that proposed amendment have a remote chance of gaining support of two-thirds of the Congress and 38 states.
The founders made it hard to amend the Constitution, but since the Bill of Rights, it's been done on the average of once every 12 years. It's time to end discrimination based on place of birth that denies the equal right of every citizen to run for president.

There is a distinction. Take the case of former Governor of Michigan George Romney. He was a Republican who was a candidate for President in the 1968 Republican primaries against Nixon. George Romney was born in Mexico. But his parents were American citizens, and he was too, by birth.
The Framers of the Constitution were a lot smarter than we sometimes give them credit for. In creating the office of a National Executive, they realized that the person who was to be both the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, should not have any divided loyalties.
Do the dems really want to run Chirac in 2008?
There's no mention of "democracy" or "democratic" prinicpals in the Constitution, nor in the Declaration for that matter. They do mention "repulic" or "republican" several times though. Under our Constitution, "the people" can't do anything they want. They can't take your property without compensation, they can't take your arms, and they can't throw you in jail without charges, among other things. They can ammend the Constituion, but this one is a non-starter. BTW, I too kinda like the Governator and I think we could do worse for a President. But I'm not willing to give up the safeguard in all cases just because it would probalby work out OK (not ideal, his politics are pure RINO) in this one case.
What I don't understand is how he can assumedly believe that we could find no better potential candidate native to the US, such that we'd have to elect an immigrant.
Then why are you so eager to open the highest office in our nation to citizens of those other nations?
Sounds to me like you're just itching to accelerate the destruction of this nation.
Actually the dems are backing it for there own reasons.
One of the Governors is a woman who was born in Canada, alot of dems want her to either run or be able to run for president.
I hate saying this, but everyone here is just assuming that the whole point of this amendment is just for Arnold, if the dems support something, there's generally a sinister motive to it. It seems that to many people just look at things a little shortsighted instead of looking into all the motives.
Like Jennifer Granholm, I was born in Canada too. So yes, I am a proud native North American as well as American, period. But I don't favor amending the Constitution lightly. There are other capacities in which foreign born American citizens can serve their country.
As a foreign born American myself, I don't doubt the patriotism of immigrants. I think they have made great contributions to this country and enriched all of our lives. What's great about America is you're accepted as an American even if you haven't been born here. You can move to live in another country and you will always be regarded as an outsider, a foreigner, no matter how long you've lived there. If we're going to amend the Constitution, let's do so because it benefits the country not because it confers a benefit on someone who otherwise might not eligible simply on account of birth. And nothing keeps foreign born Americans from serving their country in other capacities.
Ditto... Double Dittos... Triple Dittos... Quad Dittos... Sheesh... Supercalifragilistic Multimegamillion Dittos !!!
.
Your analogy doesn't hold here. Look at the history of the Papal States. Plenty of Catholics have, for just and unjust reasons, resisted and even gone to war against the temporal interests of the Vatican.
This would amount to amending the Constitution for the benefit of ONE MAN - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Even thought I agree with some of his positions, and that Governor Schwarzenegger might even be a decent President, I think it's a bad idea.
DUDE! That was friggin' HARSH! LOL
If Safire had any brains or balls he wouldn't be working for the Slimes..
One correction: That should be "governor(s)" ... (Granholm/Schwarzenegger)
This idea sêms to be a start at giving "the world" a voice in US elections.
Uh, I'm not. In case you weren't aware, the Hatch Amendment (and every other version of the Amendment I've seen) would open the Presidency to foreign-born Americans who've been naturalized citizens for at least 20 years. But I guess we need to be afraid that Osama bin Laden might enter this country, become a citizen, wait 20 years, get elected President, then order the Strategic Command to launch its nukes on American cities.
Sounds to me like you're just itching to accelerate the destruction of this nation.
You sound like a frickin' DUer. Get this straight: people can disagree with you on some issues, especially relatively minor issues like this one, and still love this country and have her best interests at heart. Let's leave the circular firing squads to the Democrats, hmmm?
Thanks. I stand corrected.
It IS a non sequitur. The founders and the documents assuned that loyalty to God does not conflict with loyalty to the nation. Loyalty to another nation would so conflict. Liberals and other sorts of socialists assume that loyalty to anything other than the state at any level conflicts with loyalty to the State. Conservatives and Constitutionalists take the Constitution at its word.
