The 28th Amendment
NY Times ^ | November 22, 2004 | WILLIAM SAFIRE

Like a cloud no bigger than a man's hand, the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution is gathering on the political horizon.

No, it's not the anti-same-sex amendment that President Bush supports. Only if the Supreme Court strikes down the federal Defense of Marriage Act - or if it overturns the changes in state constitutions adopted to block recognition of same-sex marriages legal elsewhere - will that proposed amendment have a remote chance of gaining support of two-thirds of the Congress and 38 states.

The founders made it hard to amend the Constitution, but since the Bill of Rights, it's been done on the average of once every 12 years. It's time to end discrimination based on place of birth that denies the equal right of every citizen to run for president.

Wow. One of the NY Time's token "conservatives" thinks he's smarter than the Founders. Silly Safire.

The Founders were men, not Gods, and like all men they were not infallible. I approve of this proposed Amendment.

I propose an Amendment that allows only myself to be President, with no term limits.

That does it. If the NYT is for it, I'm against it!

It is said that those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.

That said, one is well-advised to take a long hard look at the last country that went out of its way to put an ethnic Austrian in power.

I approve of this proposed Amendment.

Enjoy President Soros, pal.

It'll be a cold day in Hell before I let this happen to my country.

Never said they were gods. I do, however, think they were correct in realizing that a foreign born President would face serious problems as Chief Executive. After all, should he/she take actions that impacted his/her homeland, it would be inevitable that the question of dual loyalties would taint the policy debate.

The founders were extremely worried about British-born "Tories," hence the provision. I think most of their contempories who were Tories are no longer eligible by reason of infirmity or something.

OK. I'll support this IF the naturalized citizen has continuously resided in this country for 40 years post-citizenship.

Otherwise, no way.

Yeah. And I suppose George Soros and Madeline Albright are exactly the sorts the Founders envisioned heading the Republic.

This proposed amendment is dead. No one is going to amend the Constitution to satisfy the ego of an unproven governor.

This amendment will never pass. Please, are we really going to replace the cult of personality of the Clintoons with one of Arnold? And I actually like him, A LOT, but he can't be president.

Sorry. He actually served in the Austrian Army. I mean, you can't be serious!

"He's a libertarian conservative"

A $3-6 billion taxpayer giveaway to the biotechs is neither libertarian nor conservative.

I congratulate you on your knowledge of history. I diss you for flunking Logic 101. Besides, since Adolf was a super-control-freak and Ahhhnold is a big live-and-let-liver, defining them by common ancestry is obviously WAY beyond absurd (and quite bigoted perhaps?) in this context.

Who said Schwarzenegger was a libertarian conservative? The guy's a frickin' Kennedy with an 'R' by his name. Ahhnold ain't nothin' but a RINO.

I would support an amendment that would allow the foreign-born to run for President only if at the same time it removed automatic citizenship from those who happen to be born in the U.S. of non-citizen parents.

Ahhhnold is a big live-and-let-liver

Tell that to the embryos that your beloved Ahhnold just condemned to death with his endorsement of $3 BILLION for embryonic stem cell research.

My statement stands. The last time I saw a government sacrificing the innocent in the name of medical research, it was headed up by Dr. Josef Mengele.
