Like a cloud no bigger than a man's hand, the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution is gathering on the political horizon.
No, it's not the anti-same-sex amendment that President Bush supports. Only if the Supreme Court strikes down the federal Defense of Marriage Act - or if it overturns the changes in state constitutions adopted to block recognition of same-sex marriages legal elsewhere - will that proposed amendment have a remote chance of gaining support of two-thirds of the Congress and 38 states.
The founders made it hard to amend the Constitution, but since the Bill of Rights, it's been done on the average of once every 12 years. It's time to end discrimination based on place of birth that denies the equal right of every citizen to run for president.

I'm referring to two different potential candidates. Jennifer Granholm, for example, moved to the United States from Canada when she was four. Do you think she's more loyal to Canada than the United States? Arnold Schwarzenegger came here at 21 because he loved this land, and jumped through the hoops necessary to become a naturalized citizen. Do you doubt his patriotism?
Why don't you trust the voters to pick the best President from the largest available pool of candidates?
"Why don't you trust the voters to pick the best President from the largest available pool of candidates?"
So why stop at citizens? I'm sure there are some damned fine folks around the world looking to be President. Surely you trust the people to make their selection amongst such a large pool. So why discriminate?
Would a Jew be able to bomb Israel if necessary? Would a Catholic be able to go to war with the Vatican? Would Michael Dukakis, son of Greek immigrants, have been able to take a hard line with Greece?
It's a good question: would an Iranian immigrant be able to effectively deal with Iran? It's a question that would certainly come up during the campaign, and I trust the voters to make the correct judgment.
Yes, but this amendment wouldn't just let Arnold run. This isn't just for Arnold. Maybe there could be an Adolf Hitler clone from Canada that would like to run someday.
I have no problem with the children of immigrants growing up to become President. Their parents, however, are another matter. I don't want President Ortega from Tijuana to be able to turn America into a colony of Mexico (Although in Caleeforneea that has effectively already happened.)
Arnold is my governor and I got to tell ya, he is one hell of a charismatic guy. My wife and I live in Roseville, a bedroom suburb of Sacramento. Just before the recall election, we went to the State Capitol on a Sunday to see Arnold's big, last rally. For some unknown reason (I think it's because my wife is pretty..) we got to go to the "VIP" area. There were 10,000 people there, but this was right in front of Arnold's stage. This man has some superhuman qualities!! Maybe it's because of all his movies. Maybe it's his charming wit and humor. But, we should all be wary of this man. I think, but I don't know for certain, that he's a decent person. But I am pretty certain that a HUGE ego comes with him. Let's be careful with this one...
Mountie stormtroopers (But very polite ones)...forcing us to listen to Celine Dione over and over again...Jim Carrey as Minister of Propaganda...but we would get better beer!
got that right about Mengele....and his protege, Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood....
You are probably right. But I live and work in the halls of power in Sacramento. Arnold IS a control freak. So am I. But I don't run a state..or a country.
and America's founding documents FORBID Arnold from being President. FORBID. CANNOT BE. Arnold is a stealth Kennedy as stated upthread....
What was his rank?
Bill Safire's intellect is faaar overrated...
Well maybe we can ask the enlightened Safire if he finds it "discrimination" to "deny the right" of every 12 year-old, OR rapist to be President.
Afterall, they too are "citizens."
Albright is loyal not to the U.S. but to the U.N.
If the Left were to succeed in elminating the Electoral College so that this were no longer a Republic, then a rigged 'democratic' election with massive ballot fraud would be enough to put Soros or Annan in the White House....scary how close we came to having John Kerry there--and that Communist WAS born here.
Ammending the constitution because a foriegn born Body Builder & extremely popular Movie Star happens to get elected Governor of California is silliness. The founders knew what they were doing. I say let well enough alone.
