I wonder if there is any connection to the September (?) event when a foreign ship was detained before being permitted up the Delaware because one of the ship's officers claimed there was a bomb on board. Wasn't this later proven to be false? Maybe this was some kind of diversion or dry run?????.
My guess is that it used to be a 15 foot straight pipe. wedged in the river bottom at lets say a 45 degree angle. The ship hit it in the direction that would further push it into the river bottom. This gouged the the ship tearing holes in it. But it also bent the pipe into its current u shape as the ship passed over. Since the pipe is now bent into a u shape it is not as likely to damage another ship passing by it.

"Brentwood Facility to Irradiate Mail"
Updated: Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004 - 2:55 PM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON (AP) - Any piece of mail sent to a federal agency in D.C. first has to go to New Jersey, where it's irradiated before returning south for delivery. But a new facility slated for Northeast Washington will do away with the trip to the Garden State."
What a coincidence that no ship has hit it before now. Is this possible?
You may be right, however, I'm having a hard time imagining the crew not hearing/feeling the "bump in the road". Also, the holes/tears were in the aft of the ship. Unless the aft was somewhat lower in the water than the fore, I would have thought the holes would be more forward, if your theory were correct. Any "old-salts" out there have any insight?

re: "15' pipe not an accident"
Let me try to put an end to this particular 'tin foil' discussion topic. While the PIQ (pipe in question) may or may not have contributed to the damage to the ship, it was almost certainly not placed there for that objective. I've spent a great deal of my life doing silly stuff underwater, and I tell you from experience that, for volumes of reasons, this simply CANNOT be the case; particularly where deployment by scuba divers as bad guys is concerned.
This is not to say that the ship damage was / was not an accident. Simply that the pipe was not placed for that purpose by malefactors.
Since the ship was penetrated by a gash while in motion, in my mind that almost assures that it was probably an accident. If you were going to take go after ships using that waterway, underwater obstacles would not be the drug of choice. My bet is the pilot erred and hit something he shouldn't have in an area in which he shouldn't have been, and is trying to cover.

OFF TOPIC...
About 6 months or so ago, I opened a restaurant door for a utility worker who looked a bit on the tired side. "It" turned out to be a woman worker and she said, "Thanks, but I get my own doors." Obviously wasn't from around here...
Just want to say hello to everyone. Far too long to be without a computer :-). I'll never catch up after being gone almost three weeks. Will try to backtrack over the last couple of days. Thanks to all for keeping up the effort and work.
Big swings in a volatile market aren't unusual. I'm betting gold resumes it's steady climb and this time next year it'll be steady at $800. My broker thinks it'll hit $500 before the new year and $800 by July '05.
I woke up in the middle of the night last night wondering what chaos would occur if OBL found his way into America's heartland and it was televised, as promised by them. How would that affect us, our fears about personal safety and trust in our leadership, especially if punctuated with a massive attack. Open borders, unenforced immigration laws, political correctness and toleration of anti-American organizations (ACLU and its ilk) are going to come back to bite us where it hurts one day or downright destroy us. I'm hoping for a better night's sleep tonight, but it won't be because our politicians and judges have made me feel more safe, at least not yet!

Australia gives Indonesia National Police funds for terrorism protection
Dr. Saad Al-Faqih, the head of Al-Islah movement issued a statement today confirming the date of the upcoming demonstrations for December 16th. The event is taking on serious tones with provisions for everything from banking to security being outlined in Dr. Al-Faqihs statement yesterday, indicates an uprising is in the works. .
Billed as demonstrations, the Al-Islah event is now taking on serious tones. Headed by Saad Al-Faqih, the leader of the movement who resides in England, many Al-Islah members requested Al-Faqihs permission to carry arms during the demonstration for self defense, especially now that the Jordanian mercenaries hired by the Saudi government will out in full force. Dr. Al-Faqih has approved any means necessary for participants to defend themselves during the demonstrations. In a statement issued yesterday, Dr. Al-Faqih outlines provisions for everything from banking to security once the Saudi regime has been toppled, which indicates confrontations rather than demonstrations could occur.
JUS learned recently that the government of Saudi Arabia has requested an anti-riot force from Jordan to help maintain security during the upcoming demonstrations organized by the Islah movement. The request clearly shows that the security situation in Saudi is spiraling out of control and it appears that the Saudi government no longer trusts its own security force's ability to maintain its control over the Kingdom.
Jordan has responded by sending 7000 anti-riot soldiers with full riot gear. According to sources close to the Islah movement, the terms of the agreement are
Jordanian soldiers have arrived in the country by sea on vessels carrying the Saudi flag
2500 soldiers were sent to Riyadh, 3500 to Jeddah, and 1000 were to guard Royal palaces.
Each soldier will receive between SR8000-SR12000 per month. The Saudi Embassy in Jordan has already issued checks to the Jordanian government.
Jordan's King Abdullah II will (and may have already) receive SR 500 million as a gift, plus, additional undisclosed quantities of free oil.
The Al-Islah demonstrations are to be held in Riyadh, Jeddah, and some eastern cities on Thursday, 16 December (4/11/1425).
A public backlash is expected, especially if Jordanian police kill or injure any demonstrators. The Al-Islah Movement has a radio station based in London that broadcasts into the Kingdom however the station has struggled to remain on the air, with constant efforts by the Saudi, American and British governments to scramble their signals and limit their ability to reach Saudi citizens. The Saudi government has formally requested the extradition of Saad Al-Faqih but the British have turned down this request because they could not produce evidence that Al-Faqih is advocating violence in the UK or the KSA.
Many Al-Islah supporters are calling the upcoming event a major revolution, mirrored only by the French revolution, however that remains to be seen. What is clear is that resistance to the Saudi regime that has long been brewing is rising to the surface and exists even among the Saudi security forces leaving the Saudi government no choices but to resort to outside help to protect itself from being toppled.
