The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

But 700 miles could be easily traversed with no stops for refueling in a larger plane. What about a smaller one? I'm not sure what their range is. I believe he was piloting a Cessna.

>>Hope that goober hasn't flown over my house in the past few days.<<

You know, that got me to thinking. All of last night I kept hearing low-flying helicopters. I went outside to look on several occasions, but was unable to identify if they were police, traffic, life-flight or what. This began about 9pm last night and continued up until 2 or 3am.

Oh great! I live 10 minutes from the Oak Ridge plants and work in Oak Ridge on a daily basis. My worst fear is that if there is a threat they will lockdown the city and I will not be able to get home. Maybe I better move some of my emergency supplies to my office! (Chaos, you must live pretty close to me!)

I live in the flight line of the largest Naval air station in the world. We have jets, helos, you name it, flying overhead all the time, so it's hard for me to know if anything is out of whack just from air traffic.

C-5A overflights are fun. It sounds like someone is playing a church pipe organ next door.

Same thing across the state line in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties. Deer everywhere but quality of harvest down. Too much pressure on forage versus numbers.

I would guess that 700 miles is possible in a smaller plane, but then I'm not a pilot. That would be about 7 hours of non-stop flying though, which may exceed a smaller plane's capacity.

British Muslims want Islamic law and prayers at work

Alan Travis and Madeleine Bunting
Tuesday November 30, 2004

The Guardian

Muslims in Britain want greater recognition of their faith with the introduction of Islamic law for civil cases and time off for prayers during the working day, but are equally committed to greater participation in British life.

A special Guardian/ICM poll based on a survey of 500 British Muslims found that a clear majority want Islamic law introduced into this country in civil cases relating to their own community.

Some 61% wanted Islamic courts - operating on sharia principles - "so long as the penalties did not contravene British law".

Swedes Reach Muslim Breaking Point

By Steve Harrigan

MALMO, Sweden — Swedish authorities in the southern city of Malmo have been busy with a sudden influx of Muslim immigrants — 90 percent of whom are unemployed and many who are angry and taking it out on the country that took them in.

"If we park our car it will be damaged — so we have to go very often in two vehicles, one just to protect the other vehicle," said Rolf Landgren, a Malmo police officer.

>>The word "smyrna" means myrrh an anointing oil and spice used to prepare the dead for burial.<< The things we learn on TM. I'll be darned.

One of the reasons I mentioned this was because I recalled a description of the many and intense praying and cleansing rituals performed by the 19 hijackers before their 911 operation. Part of these rituals included them anointing and perfuming their bodies to make themselves holy and pure and prepared to die.

Also Symrna, Turkey, historically ties in with the cult of martyrdom.

Then there's that word perfume.

Seem to remember something about Middle Tennessee State University in past news on one of the older TM threads...(other than Algore taught there). Located in Murfreesboro.
