The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Connect these dots, now
Full Story
"We should have secured the Mexican border."

That could be the pitiful lament we hear from negligent U.S. officials if Al Qaeda pulls off an attack on the United States using weapons of mass destruction smuggled across our southern frontier.

Were that horrendous event to happen, leaders in the administration and Congress would be justly hit with the same question that was perhaps unjustly cast at them and their predecessors after the unprecedented Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks: Why didn't they connect the dots?

Pakistan troops to leave area seen as hideout for bin Laden

Although the tribal region is considered a possible hiding place for bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, a senior Pakistan general said earlier this month that no sign of bin Laden has been found.

arsenic poisoning takes time, doesn't it? Recall that horrible movie "Flowers in the Attic", where they slowly killed the children off with arsenic on cookies?

Arsenic can certainly be administered in low, controlled doses that produce a chronic illness without causing death. Absent a blood test and tox screen, we can only speculate based on the picture.

The RNAi article fits nicely with things I wanted to do when I was in school around 1974-1976. I figured out a way to make pure human insulin, but didn't have the $$$ to make it go. Thankfully, someone else did. Using RNA viruses to deliver targeted segment of mRNA is a valid delivery mechanism, but not very specific. Our lab test organisms were always built with a lethal deficiency so they would not survive outside of the lab. Imagine a targeted mRNA strand that gets introduced into a person with an active case of influenza. Oops. If that mRNA codes for a long enough sequence to induce apoptosis, we are royally screwed.

Exploding dog in Kashmir wounds four

Jihadists (unidentified "militants" to Reuters) use dog for suicide mission. From Reuters, with thanks to Twostellas.

SRINAGAR, India - A bomb tied to a stray dog in Indian-controlled Kashmir blew up on Friday, killing the animal and wounding four people, police said.

The bomb, believed to have been planted by militants, exploded near a bunker of Indian soldiers in Sopore town in the north of disputed Kashmir, a spokesman said.

It is not the first time suspected militants have used animals in attacks on Indian forces. In 2000, a bomb packed on a mule exploded, killing two soldiers.

More than 45,000 people have died since a revolt against Indian rule in its portion of Kashmir took off in 1989.

Report: Moscow tests new missile system

11/29/2004, 6:31 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has successfully tested a modernized anti-ballistic missile system, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told President Vladimir Putin on Monday, according to the Interfax news agency.

Ivanov told Putin that his ministry would "further perfect and modernize the anti-ballistic missile system," the news agency reported.

He said the anti-ballistic missile had passed its test on Monday morning at the Sary-Shagaz testing range in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan.

Ivanov said earlier that Russia would test-fire a mobile version of the new Topol-M missile before the year's end and would commission it next year.

Topol-Ms have a range of about 6,000 miles and reportedly can maneuver in ways that are difficult to detect. The missile, which can intercept and destroy other missiles, has been deployed in silos since 1998.

Russia reacted calmly when Washington withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002 in order to develop a nationwide missile shield. But Moscow has since complained about Washington's plans to build new low-yield nuclear weapons.

Last month, Putin said Russia was developing a new nuclear missile system unlike any weapon held by other nuclear powers. In the past year, Russian defense officials have also made several announcements about new weapons.
