In naming Condoleezza Rice as his pick for secretary of state, President Bush is sending his most loyal adviser to his most disloyal agency: The State Department. But no matter what changes she makes -- and many are needed -- the bureaucracy is entrenched almost to the point of being impenetrable, meaning real reform could well prove illusory.
Miss Rice will soon take the reins of a massive 47,000-person operation that is literally sprawled out across the world. It is an insular institution that operates in a remarkably similar way from one administration to the next, typically viewing presidents, as one Foreign Service officer puts it, as the "summer help."

How about this scenario: Rice does a bang-up job at State, after the 2006 elections, Cheney retires, Rice steps in as VEEP, and sets herself up for Presidential run in 2008. Who better to carry on the Bush legacy?

Yea, there are 47,000 people in the State Department and a lot of them do not believe in the sovereignty of their own country. Those kind are a disgrace and out to be thrown out of government service for their disloyalty to the United States. They'll kiss the ass of a foreign tyrant and slap a citizen of their own country and call that "diplomacy."

Not just the left...well not just the traditional left. Two days ago pat buchanan was trashing her and her abilities. This from a man who considered Arafat a great man. Some people still believe he's conservative.
At Sec State Condi will be well up the succession ladder. VP Cheney, Speaker of House Hastert, Pres. pro tempore of Senate (?Warner). Isn't Sec State next on the list?

I would like to see Newt Gingrich as Condi's Admin Assistant. Newt did agreat indepth study of the Foggybottom and their was alsoa lady, who's name escapes me at the moment that sat on the panel with him. I believe she was with some think tank.
With Newt and the Mystery Lady !! as the Admin Assistants, working with Condi, they could really do some attitude checks at the old Foggybottom and get rid of a lot of the liberal croakers.
This would also allow Condi to concentrate on the Foreign Policy knowing her back was covered. Knowing the changes at Foggybottom for the projection of the President's foreign policy were being made. That would be a great team I think.
