PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Residents in a Columbus suburb who haul out their trash cans too early could be hauled off to jail under a proposed law.
The Pickerington City Council is considering the measure, but some members are worried the ordinance's current language could lead to first-time offenders being thrown in jail.
Councilman Ted Hackworth is trying to pass a law that would bar people with Friday trash pickups from putting their garbage out before Thursday night. And it would require them to take the cans in by Friday night.
He said some residents put their trash cans out on Monday and leave them out all week.
Councilman Mike Sabatino said jailing someone for leaving trash cans out is a little over the top.
Oh yes, local leaders tackling the pressing issues of the day.
And he's right. This idea is insane.
Uh, yeah. And Charles Manson had impulse control issues.
"Hey Spike, waddya in for?"
"Carjacking, murder 2, and running a crack house".
"How about you, new guy? Waddya in for?"
"I put my trash can out before 8 PM on Thursday."
Statistically, isn't putting out the trash can early a sort of "gateway" crime? Soon, the youth are looking for greater thrills than just putting out the can on Tuesday, so they're drawn into a life of lawlessness. All this human tragedy because the city didn't take the outcome of putting trash can early seriously.
Or something.
If they've got a bad rat problem, and some places do, I could see it as a public health issue. But forget the jail, they should just levy a fine. I'm sure they could use the money. Especially if they've got a rat problem :)
Drop a trash can in the mayor's front yard.
Call the police.
I had fun at Ohio State. Ultimately, I'm glad I decided to move out of Ohio though. Crazy laws and ordinances like this were being passed all the time, at least around the campus. Not suprising to see the craziness extends to the suburbs.
This law isn't about sanitation - its merely cosmetic. And it is over the top.
I know there just aren't enough rapists, murderers, and garden variety burglars to fill the jails, but...
Since the trash cans have to be somewhere, this would merely move the "rat problem" from the curb to, say inside or behind the garage (or wherever people hide their cans). I suspect the real "rat" problem is inside council's chambers.
wow..sounds like where i live in kalifornia, where neighbors are encouraged to rat each other out for such serious offenses as putting the wrong kind of trash into the wrong can, lighting the fireplace on a non-approved night, or parking your car in the wrong direction in front of your house.
America,,,"hooked on force".
If the trash is secured in cans, I don't see an issue.
My neighborhood we have those big industrial containers you "lease" from the garbage people. Some folks move them away from the curb, but they are a big pain so most of the time they are left by the road. I don't have a driveway so ours just gets moved from inside the gate to outside (which my son hates lol).
This looks to me like one of those "it's unsightly" issues- like the locality that told people with pickup trucks they couldn't leave them out in a driveway or curbside, they had to be garaged.
BBL. I've got to go bury my trash. Sheesh...
They don't. Rats don't have an easier time of it at the curb than the backyard 30 feet away.
This is all about the new found "right" to a pleasant view.
Our local leaders here in Mpls. are concerning themselves with real issues, like banning leaf blowers.
" I decided to move out of Ohio though. Crazy laws and ordinances "
I heard a joke on the Truckin' Bozo show (yes it is real - good to listen to when you can't sleep!) Truckers listen to it overnight, and often complain about unduly aggressive traffic enforcement against trucks. SO . . .
'There is a sign on the Interstates saying "Welcome to Ohio." It should say "Welcome to Ohio -- you are under arrest."'
Actually it's not that bad! ;)
No, it's a public health issue. Putting the cans out too early only gives kids that much more time to be tempted to eat directly out of them. Do you want kids eating directly out of other people's trash cans? Do you? D-mnit, this law is FOR THE CHILDREN!
