America's combined federal, state and local adult correctional population reached a new record of almost 6.9 million men and women last year, an increase of 130,700 people since December 31, 2002, according to the US Justice Department.

The correctional population of 6,889,800 includes people incarcerated in prisons and jails as well as those on probation and parole. In calendar year 2003, 1,387,269 adults were incarcerated in federal and state prisons and 691,301 inmates served time in local jails. Ya it probably is higher in California. I think 30% is national average. I am sure I could find the info online but I am at work right now. I'll check when I get home.

What will be really great is when they have prisons everywhere and lock up people for speeding and tail gating. Also, I can't wait for the police to lock people up for breaking city ordinances like building without permits. They should be in jail for a longggg time. And people who don't stop at cross walks... or worse, people who eat cookies at Safeway and forget to pay on their way out. Or people with late fines- they should be tossed in the clinker too.

I agree with your statement but I recall reading some where that the people in prision for possesion usually went to court for a more serious crime, but because the courts are packed they want to go through as many cases as quickly as possible so the plea bargin the more serious crimes (which would require a longer trial) and they just agree to go with possesion of drugs.

Though it's been awhile since I read this so it might not be wholey correct.

Well, considering that the US population is growing, illegal immigration is unchecked, and the standards for acceptable public behavior and willingness to be responsible for one's own actions continue to deteriorate, what's the big surprise?

This is good news...Cops are finally able to do their job...thanks in part to the patriot act, I'm willing to bet.

I assume you are able to make the correlation based on hard statistics, since you are willing to bet.

Hmm, I'm sure I know at least 35 people and not one of them has ever been in prison.

If it makes you feel any better, I strongly beiieve that most drugs (except those that provoke violent reactions) ought to be decriminalized.

The headline NATION'S PRISON POPULATION INCREASING is somewhat misleading. Of the almost 7 million it talks about, over 4 million are on probation, another 775,000 are on parole. Being on probation/parole is not being part of a prison population. The prison population (federal, state, and local combined) is about 2 million, not 7 million. So it's more like 1 in a hundred, not 1 in 32, who actually constitute the "prison population".
