Another WWII'er faces eternity . . .

Late last night and most of today, I spent my time in the hospital with my Mom.

She's 81 and recently had a spill down the stadium steps of the Target Center (at the last Bush rally in Minnesota) and has developed a subdural hematoma in the rear portion of her brain. She seems stable at this time, but who knows?

Most of her waking hours were spent nagging my Dad and her other children about what we need to be doing, etc., etc., etc.

She trained for service as a nurse in WWII but never went overseas because the war luckily ended. My Father, however, served in the Black Cat squadrons in the South Pacific and, among other things, depth-charged Japanese submarines.

During the course of my life, I cannot honestly recall hearing one-second of self-pity from either one of them during my entire life. If she dies, I am prepared. . .and believe me, so is she.

Sheena the warrior queen ain't got nothin' on this Godzilla-like woman. My momma be BAD!

They are going to their reward every day. My wife's uncle will be buried tomorrow (13 Nov), after 92 years of love for and service to the Republic. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, but after Pearl Harbor, he was disarmed and all his family were sent to "Relocation" camps (Michele M. is right on a lot of things, but totally wrong about Japanese-American internment). Common sense returned and he was reactivated. Served in Europe and was wounded in Germany. Limped all the rest of his life from the leg wound. Go For Broke Ralph!

Have no anxiety about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving,
let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding,
will keep your hearts and your minds,
in Christ Jesus.

Thanks all! After minimal decompression, I'm ready to hit the hay. The response of good people to my Momma's plight is more than gratifying...it is unbelievable!

Good night to you all! I have to some rest . . . otherwise I'd sit here and suck beer until sunrise. All of us appreciate the prayer and kind wishes!

God Bless your Mom and your family. My Mama went home to the Lord, and to my Daddy this past summer. She had been ready to go for years, and we frankly prayed for God to take her whenever He was ready. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 7 yrs. ago, and for the last 3, was always wanting to go 'home'. Well she made it this summer; unexpected, but not unwelcomed by her kids who had watched this vivacious woman slowly retreat into a shell, not of her own making.

I'm glad your Mom and your family are ready. It will still be hard, but it will be easier to accept than if you had no warning and no time to say your goodbyes.

I hope her wake is a true celebration of her life. We were fortunate that Mama's was the only funeral at the time because others may not have understood the laughter coming out of the parlors. Mama was a fun person, and we had many stories to share with the people who came to tell her goodbye.

We ARE family here. Sometimes we have spats, but times like these, we are here for each other.

You, your mother, and your other family, are in our hearts.

God bless.

It is my belief that we are losing the greatest Americans who ever lived.

But then again, maybe not. I just stared at that sentence for several minutes lost in memories of my own father.

Maybe we aren't losing them. As long as we remember them, remember their courage in the face of adversities most of us can't even imagine, and try to live up to their standards and their ideals, well -- in that case we really haven't lost them. They live on in each and every one of us.

My father's voice is still with me; your mother's voice will still be with you as long as you live.

Fate decreed that generation would face the test that would decide the course of humanity for generations.

It sounds like your wife's uncle was with the 442nd. If so, he can face down anyone else in military history with total impunity.

Don't delude yourself into believing that you are prepared for your Mom's death. I said the same thing. Guess what. I wasn't.....and I had six weeks to "prepare" myself. It's going to hit you differently than you think it will.

Nonetheless, prayers sent.

Even though I may not post on the prayer threads, I always read them and offer my heathen prayers in silent absentia.

I think a lot of us here do the same. I know I do.

Prayers to our Lord, for you Mother. May He bless her and have Mercy on her soul.

Thank you all (poster and viewers alike) for your thoughts and prayers!

As of this AM, Mom is doing a little better and spent a fairly restful night. She has a little more clarity too. We'll see what happens from now on...

Again, thank you all so much! She'll hear of her prayer network of right-wing, intolerant, religious bigots (as we're so often portrayed) today so maybe she'll get a lift from that as well as your prayers.

You are a fine, fine lot of folks!

You might be interested in knowing that they have moved my Mom from intensive care to the regular part of the hospital and stopped giving her plasma (to promote clotting). The bleeding has apparently stopped and she is becoming clearer in thought and speech. I am encouraged and thankful for all of your kindness.
