Another WWII'er faces eternity . . .
Self ^ | November 12, 2004 | Self

Late last night and most of today, I spent my time in the hospital with my Mom.

She's 81 and recently had a spill down the stadium steps of the Target Center (at the last Bush rally in Minnesota) and has developed a subdural hematoma in the rear portion of her brain. She seems stable at this time, but who knows?

Most of her waking hours were spent nagging my Dad and her other children about what we need to be doing, etc., etc., etc.

She trained for service as a nurse in WWII but never went overseas because the war luckily ended. My Father, however, served in the Black Cat squadrons in the South Pacific and, among other things, depth-charged Japanese submarines.

During the course of my life, I cannot honestly recall hearing one-second of self-pity from either one of them during my entire life. If she dies, I am prepared. . .and believe me, so is she.

Sheena the warrior queen ain't got nothin' on this Godzilla-like woman. My momma be BAD!

I guess I'm kind of a 'leave-it-up-to-God' sort of guy and I have never tried to influence his mysterious ways one way or another. Even though I may not post on the prayer threads, I always read them and offer my heathen prayers in silent absentia. Can you do the same?

I guess what I am saying is that I DO believe (somewhere) that God has power and desire to help us here on earth. I can handle Mom's death, but I have little one's that need her around as an anchor.

Can I ask for prayer even if I am half-hearted in my own belief?

I will pray for your mother.

Coincidentally, my mother was a WWII Army nurse, and my dad was a C-47 pilot, flying The Hump and also in Italy and North Africa.

Prayers for your mom, sweetie. May God allow her to stay here a while longer. May your children benefit from her wisdom.

God bless her.

And God bless you.

Prayers for you.

My Pop died a few weeks back. I actually had 3 deaths in a 1 week or so period this summer in my family. It can be a difficult time. Be strong, as I suspect you actually are.

Years ago I learned from someone that I loved and admired deeply that "everything happens for a reason."

I believe that.

As an atheist, I can’t offer a prayer, but you sound like an ideal anchor for your kids. It’s sobering when people pass like this. My 85 yo mother’s not far from going. Whatever becomes of her passing, your family is a monument to her honor, and I’m sure you’re up to taking the baton.

Thank you all - you can't beleive how invigorating this is until you experience it! You give me the peace and freedom to get some sleep before I go in tomorrow. Thank you!

Asking for prayer is a wonderfully self-less thing to do. You and your mom will be in my prayers.
