Propane explosions force evacuation of about 5,000 and closure of highway

PORT DARLINGTON, Ont. (CP) - Explosions that sent debris into the air "like rockets" and a blaze at what was believed to be a propane company forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people late Tuesday, police said.

The fire near the waterfront in the community east of Toronto could be seen for miles and the explosions rocked homes in the area. "I opened the blinds and there was this explosion, at least eight or nine storeys into the sky of light and fire," a woman named Heather reported. "Then we just started hearing the explosions of the propane tanks every 20 seconds for about 40 minutes."

"There was one big mushroom cloud followed by a series of smaller explosions, like somebody attacking something," said a man who would identify himself only as F. Harris, who lives in nearby Bowmanville.

"You could see these things shooting into the air like rockets. The house was shaking."

Sgt. Paul Malik, a Durham police spokesman, said earlier "We anticipate about 5,000 people are being evacuated at this time."

"That area is completely evacuated right now. They (firefighters) are trying to determine how close they can get to the facility. No one has been injured."

"It's still a really hot fire."

"It is somewhat controlled but we don't know how many explosions or if there's going to be any explosions at this particular time."

The fire also caused a power failure in the south end of Bowmanville.

Malik said the source of the explosions was believed to be a propane company south of the highway near a marina.

Provincial police closed the nearby Trans-Canada Highway and there were reports of pieces of propane tanks landing on the highway, which runs near Lake Ontario.

Agnes Jones of Bowmanville lives about a five-minute drive from the marina and adjoining two-storey hotel.

"It sounded like a bunch of explosions, like hunters firing guns, except that the house was shaking."

The fire was about five kilometres east of the Darlington nuclear generating facility.

Profile people who purchase propane tanks.

I seem to recall this past week a report of a thousand or so missing propane tanks in California. This Ontario exercise looks very suspisious.

If it was methane, I would of thought it was from Michael Moore blowing himself up by trying to burn the feces encrusted hairs off his arse.

Good thing to hear there are no injuries, although that seems inconclusive since they can't get close to the facility.

Astonishing that a flammable material would ever explode accidentally. Who would have thunk it?

Yeah, I know- a real explosive concept. Soybean dust can do some pretty impressive things to a grainery, too.

I used to get a kick out of how many people would call up our college to ask us if we were experimenting on something every time someone's gas stove made a house cook off. (About once every two weeks in the winter it seemed)

Now they probably call the FBI

I cant recall a grain elevator going up anytime recently. Guess they've got that under control.

Interesting Science Channel show on the investigation of that plant in NC that went up a couple years ago. Turned out to be plastic dust that had accumulated on a hanging ceiling. Power of the blast was incredible.
