The Hill ^ | 9/14/2004 | Klause Marre and Bob Cusack Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) considered calling for a top Bush administration official to resign after reading his recent comments on enforcing immigration laws, according to sources.Upset with Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security Asa Hutchinson's remark that it would not be realistic to enforce current immigration laws, Tancredo, a staunch supporter of more immigration laws, contemplated calling for the administration officials resignation. The two Republicans planned last night to discuss their differences, and it is not expected that Tancredo will ask for Hutchinson to step down.Hutchinson last week told The Washington Times that it would be unrealistic to say that officials...

Rocky Mountain News ^ | 10/5/2004 | M.E. Sprengelmeyer WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., warned President Bush on Monday not to play politics with homeland security, after the White House reportedly asked Congress to remove some immigration measures from a pending intelligence bill. The legislation is meant to overhaul the nation's intelligence services, implementing recommendations of the commission that studied the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.A House version of the bill includes provisions to speed the deportation of illegal immigrants and prevent them from obtaining driver's licenses. It would also ban official use of identification cards that some foreign governments issue.Tancredo said Bush has asked that those provisions be removed...

Tom Tancredo's Congressional Website ^ | 10-4-2004 | Carlos Espinosa Tancredo said - "These proposals may have prevented 9/11 from ever happening, it just doesnt make sense..." From the Office of Congressman Tom Tancredo FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 4, 2004 WASHINGTON, D.C. Congressman Tom Tancredo (CO-06) was shocked to learn of the White Houses demand of House Republicans to exclude portionsof the House Intelligence Bill which would prevent those who are in the United States illegally from obtaining drivers licenses, speed up the deportation process, and bar the use of the Matricula Consular card, which the FBI has already testified before Congress as being too susceptible to fraud... |

Common Sense in Immigration Reform - ping.

"Arizona's Proposition 200 marks a milestone in the battle for common sense immigration reform," said Tancredo, chair of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus.

Am I missing something here? It seems this law is intended to prevent ILLEGAL immigrants from taking part in elections and receiving public funds, which would be ILLEGAL.
Is it possible that this hasn't received a lot of negative publicity because even the Judy Wooodruff crowd can't find a way to spin it?

Any law that affects voter's [sic] rights must be approved by the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice to ensure it conforms to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Certainly, it's a stretch to say this affects voters' rights.

"Am I missing something here?" No, you're not. This is simply a proposition to enforce voting laws into compliance to ensure that only American citizens are voting in American elections.
Kinda simple, isn't it?

I imagine their argument is that there are some folks who just "slip through the system", as if they were positive they were citizens and not applying for citizenship must have just slipped their mind, just a technicality, actually...
Any other time I'd read this and think "We're going to the dogs," but not now. I think a LOT of people like me who aren't hardright religous conservatives (but ARE conservatives) are suddenly starting to think "Actually there's hope now."

Certainly, it's a stretch to say this affects voters' rights. It won't stop em from trying though. You may not be able to cash a check, drive a car, buy cigarettes or alcohol, get on an airplane, or go through virtually any federal government building's security checkpoint these days without a photo ID, but heaven forbid we tell somebody they have to show one to cast a vote! If one were to believe the Mary Frances Berry's and Jesse Jacksons of the world there must be tens of millions of blacks and mexicans in the United States who don't have any photo IDs and thus cannot do any of the perfectly common and routine aforementioned things. Of course we all know the real motive behind that argument: they want illegal alien lawbreakers to vote just like the want felons to vote because they know illegal alien lawbreakers and felons will favor Democrats.
Seriously, for a party that supposedly prides itself on "intellectual" candidates like John Kerry, the Democrats sure do have a way of attracting votes from the dumbest of the dumb (i.e. people who cannot even find a photo ID), the trashiest of the trash (i.e. the covetted prison vote), and flagrant abusers of the laws of this country (i.e. illegal aliens).

Wow, I even forgot that Prop 200 was on the ballot; had it failed, I'm sure it would have been crowed on every national news program, but in passing, it wasn't even a blip...
Even on here, I missed news articles on it. Glad to hear that Arizona had sense.

Bush can't be too "unhappy" with Tancredo that he chairs the committee. If Bush didn't want him in there, T would not be there, period.

Aztlan - Palestine Solidarity - Anti-semitism seems to be alive and well south of our border.
Osama bin Laden : The "Pancho Villa" of Islam - Osama bin Laden - a modern day Francisco (Pancho) Villa Mexican hero.
La Voz de Aztlan - Get a peek into what some Mexicans really think about issues of interest to many Americans. The site has many articles on similar subjects that could be deemed anti-American and support for what Americans considers terrorism groups and terrorist causes.

Is it possible that this hasn't received a lot of negative publicity because even the Judy Wooodruff crowd can't find a way to spin it?It's possible that because GWB got a mandate without either party having to deal with the invasion issue and protecting US jobs, culture, and economic independence that we're going to get Vincente Fox's agenda for the US.
The Dems obviously didn't want to win too badly. This issue would've gotten them a few states.
Maybe we should start a political party in time for the 2006 HOR voting. I'm serious...we all run in our districts. Here in MA, the candidates Romney gave us would've been worse that what we have, if they'd won.
