The FDR/TRUMAN generation of liberals is fast declining. The next election will be even less liberal. The dems threw everthing they had, and it was considerable, and it wasn't enough. Declining union power, Shrinking liberal elderly population, rise in conservative orthodox religions, more and better educated young people. The socialists will die a lingering death......not unlike arafat....
Great article. Although I don't agree with your comment re Chassidim. Correct me if I am wrong, but Chabad/Lubovitcher Chassidim, for instance, support Israel. Satmar Chassidim don't. But that is just a minor issue in what otherwise is a very thoughtful and correct analysis.
Thank you.
Makes sense to me . I had been wondering why more of the Jewish vote was not concerned with Israel and Bush's connection. I too believe the Jewish republican vote was greater this election.
Zay gezunt.
I agree with most of this post. It seems to me that like the Exit Polls the figures on Jewish support for Bush are off. I was the only person I knew who voted for Bush in 2000. This time around almost everyone I know voted for Bush. Something doesn't add up.
Don't leave out abortion and gays.
the average orthodox home consists of 5 to 8 children.
I have 9 kids, 11 grandkids, and 3 more on the way.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.
WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
Judging their reaction to the movie "The Passion", apparently many Jews fear that Christians are going to retaliate against them because they killed Christ.
American Christians are shocked by the idea that we would attack God's chosen people.
Historically, political enemies of the Jews in the Old World used religion to inflame the masses against the Jews, but American Christians would never do so.
This underscores a reason why the Left is so quick to ascribe President Bush's victory solely to "evangelical Christians", to divide that group from all the other orthodox and conservative people of other faiths who also do not share the Democrats domestic and foreign policy world view.
Shabbat bumps!
It was way higher than 24%. Hopefully, some responsible polling group will soon poll real Jews for REAL to get the REAL results. I'm thinking of doing it myself. Maybe y'all could help.
Othodox Jews, like orthodox Christians, are growing because they have strong moral values and believe in the future enough to have more than one child. Meanwhile, secular Jews and liberals of every stripe either don't get married. Or, if they do -- or have a long-time relationship -- they have no more than one child. And, don't forget abortion. In the end, secularist humanism is suicidal and orthodox faith gives life.
"Boca Raton Jewish liberals are in their 70's and 80's"
and all they know is Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt Roosevelt,,this is changing i will bet it was 30+% for Bush,i know from the people i know 50%
thanks for the post and sharing your views. i might add, that the people's party in southwest usa ran an openly anti-semitic platform after severe weather wiped out herds and caused crop failure in the late 1870s. realizing that they could not become a national party, they merged with today's democratic party. the anti-semitism reared its ugly heads in the 1930s during the depression. i also suggest that, despited your outstanding analysis, there is an education issue at play as well.
BTTT
I would add, though, that the primary reason for left-leaning politics among American Jews is their family ancestry. Most Jews in this country are descended from people who immigrated from Eastern Europe in the early decades of the 20th century. These immigrants came from countries where socialism had been a way of life since Bismarck unified Germany in 1870s, and they brought their "nanny-state" expectations here with them.
