Great article. Although I don't agree with your comment re Chassidim. Correct me if I am wrong, but Chabad/Lubovitcher Chassidim, for instance, support Israel. Satmar Chassidim don't. But that is just a minor issue in what otherwise is a very thoughtful and correct analysis.
This is true. See the photo of my son in my previous post, in his IDF uniform. We are Lubavitch hasidim. I'm very proud of my son. But we do have Satmar cousins who disapprove of his decision to volunteer.
Several weeks ago I attended a "Friends of the IDF" fundraising dinner. Tickets cost $180 but having a loved one in the IDF I did not have to pay.
There were other Chabad hasidim and many modern Orthodox at this event, which was held at a Conservative synagogue.
However, the Satmar and members of other non-Zionist Hasidic sects perform valuable service as paramedics and in ZAKA (the group that recovers the body parts after a terror attack).
The Neturei Karta are a very small group of "ultra-Orthodox" who are a disgrace to Judaism and humanity by their support of the Palestinian cause. But they are a tiny minority compared to the pro-PLO secular Jewish leftists like Adam Shapiro.
I agree that "most Chassids" believe in Israel as a state. I am not sure how the actual population breaks down but I was under the impression that Lubavicher Chassids are a large %age of this country's chassidic population and I know they support Israel.
