Thompson has hinted at that all along. It isn't uncommon for people to leave an administration after the first term. It happened with Clinton, happened with Reagan. Nothing to see here, move along.

He must've drank something from a stream that disagreed with him.

Good! What a lousy addition to the cabinet was this jackass.

Tommy always really wanted to be transportation secretary anyway. He did as good a job as can be expected with AmTrak.

This was never the job Tommy wanted,

I'll be sorry to see him go. He seems like a very decent guy. ;-)

That's not inconsistent with what I said. I'm just telling you that the rumor is that he's wanting to get out.

Actually I hope Powell goes to the Sec of Def spot, better use of his talents. If Rummy goes that is.

I'm betting Powell has had enough of the cabinet. When he goes, he's gone for good.

Attorney General Ashcroft appears to be leaving also. I wonder who his replacement will be?

"He wanted a different job in the administration, remember? I think it was Secretary of Transportation...but my memory could be messing with me."

That is correct. When Tommy was gov here in Wisconsin, he did a lot of work with AmTrak. I think he really preferred Transportation Sec. Bush liked the welfare reforms he put through in WI though, so he put him in as HHS Sec.

Powell IS a dove, in the traditional sense. Meaning he'll fight when he believes it's absolutely necessary, but is too willing to cave in order to make everyone happy. It's his greatest fault, and is the reason he can be so incredibly inconsistant in his statements.

To his credit, he did exactly that during the Security Council Circus. He believed in the righteousness of getting Saddam out, and is appeasing enough and socialist enough to be fluent in EUrospekk. During his presentation he was sick as a dog and SHOULD have been in bed. He turned in a fine performance. He was forceful and convincing. He even played the environment card. He failed ONLY because of the still inconceivable DEPTH of the blood for oil vouchers conspiracy. Almost nobody in the general public gave him credit for what he did that day, but he deserves kudos. He earned them.

Tommy Thompson has always said he would only go for one term. He is the former gov of Wi. I am from Wi. He has been interviewed many times here and it was no secret he would only do one term. So this is not a surprise.

I was kind of hoping Tommy would return and overthrow Doyle. Also heard Scotty Walker would like to be the one do that.

He's a great man.

I agree. I had an opportunity to spend some time with TT after 9/11 in a skybox at Soldier Field (Bears vs. Packers, what else?). Anyway, his mind is brilliant and he is bold. I've been worried lately that he does not look well. Have you noticed?

BTW, he gave me a FDNY cap that day.

That's so cool! (No, I haven't noticed his appearance lately.)

You may have heard me say this before, but he drove hours out of his way to pay his respects when my dad died. He was governor at the time, and had a state senator in tow on a political trip around the state. We were all shocked to see him there; he had sent flowers, but we didn't figure we would see him.

He is a good and genuine man.

Actually, the President explained it very well. He said that being in a cabinet position causes burn out because you spend so many hours working and away from your family. It's normal that people might want to make some kind of change after 4 years.

I suspect some (if not all) of the changes would be from people requesting to leave - and not from being fired.

I'd go with Newt G. as Sec of State. He'd clean that house of morons in a couple weeks.

Powell IS a dove, in the traditional sense.

Perhaps you are correct, I meant that is willing to fight if necessary. He described himself as a reluctant warrior. I would hope most warriors would be reluctant – although, when necessary, willing (see my tag line). My point was that being a hawk, as such, is not necessary, or perhaps even desirable, in a secretary of State.

You may be correct in saying he is “ too willing to cave in order to make everyone happy ”. But as a diplomat he wants everyone to be happy – or at least equally unhappy – it’s his job. I think he is a good man, and am sorry that he likely will not be around for the second term.
