A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....11-01-04....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Mornin' yer honor.

Thank you for once again bringing us Military Monday at the Finest.

Looking forward to a Bush Landslide tomorrow. Record numbers of Absentee Ballots have gone out and returned out here in California. If history is a lesson, Pubbies usually are the majority of those voting absentee. We went that route two weeks ago.

Salute to our Armed Forces. May they continue to have the same boss for four more years.

He called a good musician home to sweeten the air of heaven with song.

What beautiful music I just heard. Prayers for you and your family, Gail. We love you and hold you in our hearts.

It was a great rally!!

*sigh*.......how I envy those of you living in the battleground states. We never saw hide nor hair of President Bush or Vice President Cheney this election. I understand why they didn't spend any time here, CA is a lost cause. But still, had they campaigned anywhere in CA, I would have been there!

Those of us out here on the left coast have had to experience vicariously through the reports of our FReeper FRiends the excitement of being at the rallies. But, that's okay......just as long a Bush wins this election!!

Found that e-mail in my mailbox this morning.

Wednesday the MSM will be presenting excuse on top of excuse for why the traitor was defeated. They'll blame the underhanded tactics of those rascally Republicans. What they'll never admit is the American people are smart enough to chose a man with integrity. skerry's only association with integrity are what his speechwriter wrote about his mom's words to him.

Heard this a while back...

Integrity = What you do when people aren't watching.

No doubt. It will go something like this........If the evildoers on the right would just knock off the lies, the voter fraud and the intimidation, the American people MIGHT be able to get a decent President elected. LOL! Uh huh.

A friend of mine assures me that this will be a Bush landslide. How I am hoping he is right! If it is not a landslide, this could get really ugly. :-(

The Confused Samaritan

A man was beaten up by robbers on a road to London. He lay there, half dead and in bad shape. A Vicar came along, saw him and passed by on the other side. Next, a monk came by but also walked quickly on the other side. Finally, a social worker came along, looked at the man and said "Whoever did this needs help!"

I've been see-sawing today between over-confidence and hiding under my desk.
I should just calm down until tomorrow. I think Bush will win, I just have to remind myself of that!

IN THE KNOW
U.S. military deaths
• As of Saturday, at least 1,120 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The AP count is 13 higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday.
• The latest deaths reported by the military were eight Marines killed in action Saturday in Anbar province. The Marines later reported a ninth combat death, but offered no further details.
• The latest identification reported by the military was Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Battles Sr., 38, of San Antonio, who was killed Thursday in Baghdad when an explosive detonated near his checkpoint. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 21st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood.

By Jim Krane
The Associated Press
TAJI, Iraq - An Army helicopter gunship pilot is being recommended for a bravery medal for the rescue of a pair of wounded American fliers whose helicopter crashed in hostile territory south of Baghdad this month.
Capt. Ryan Welch, who co-pilots an AH-64 Apache helicopter with the 1st Cavalry Division's 4th Brigade, led a risky night mission in which he strapped himself and a wounded flier to the exterior of the two-seat gunship that flew them to safety, 4th Brigade commander Col. Jim McConville said.
Two Army pilots were killed in the Oct. 16 crash, which happened when two Army OH-58 D Kiowa helicopters collided and plummeted to a farm field just south of Baghdad's airport.
Welch, 29, of Lebanon, N.H., said he helped rescue the wounded pair by hoisting one semiconscious man into the front seat of the Apache and strapping the second pilot, also wounded and in shock, to the outside of the helicopter's body.
Welch said he then strapped himself to the helicopter's exterior, and the pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Justin Taylor, flew the Apache about 15 miles to an Army combat support hospital.
The Army is investigating whether hostile fire was involved in the collision that killed pilots Capt. Chris Johnson, 29, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and CW3 William Brennan, 37, of Bethlehem, Conn.
Those injured were CW2 Chad Beck of Killeen and CW2 Greg Crowe of Florence, Ky. Beck and Crowe are currently on leave, McConville said.
Welch, interviewed in a repair hangar on this base 12 miles north of Baghdad, said he and Taylor picked up a distress call as they flew over south Baghdad in search of insurgents teams that fire nightly mortar and rocket barrages at U.S. bases.
"We heard a distressed voice on the air. It said, 'I've got two helicopters down. Two KIA,' " Welch said.
It was Beck's voice. He made the call from his emergency radio and had triggered the rescue beacon on his flight vest, after he and Crowe walked away from the burning wreckage of their Kiowa. The surrounding farmland is a frequent launch site for insurgents' mortar attacks on Baghdad International Airport.
Welch and Taylor, 28, of Lodi, Calif., found the burning helicopter and circled the wreckage.
The emergency radio crackled again: "Hey you just overflew me. Can you see my strobe?"
It was Beck again, and Welch said he looked out the window and saw a blinking light about 100 yards from the burning helicopter.
Welch and Taylor landed in an adjacent field and radioed to Beck to meet them at the landing zone. Beck radioed back that Crowe was too hurt to walk. So Welch dashed to the crash site and found the two victims. The dead pilots lay nearby in their crashed Kiowa.
Crowe was sitting in a daze, waving a pistol, not talking. Beck was standing quietly, staring into the distance.
"They were both in the early stages of shock," Welch said. "Their eyes were glazed over. Their faces were bleeding profusely."
Welch said he and Beck helped Crowe to the Apache and hoisted him into the front pilot's seat. But the only way to carry passengers on an Apache, a two-seater, is to seat them on an exterior fender-like protuberance and strap them to a handhold.
Welch strapped Beck to one side and himself to the other, Taylor lifted off, and the two Apaches flew to Camp Ferrin-Huggins, seeing the headlights of U.S. ground troops that collected the dead pilots and the wrecked helicopters.
Welch described the ride as "like driving a motorcycle 90 mph without a helmet."
"It felt like my nostrils were going to tear," he said.
Separately, another pair of Taji-based Army fliers are also being considered for medals for their role in the Aug. 8 rescue of two Kiowa pilots whose craft was downed during pitched fighting in Baghdad's Sadr City.
Those fliers -- CW3 Steve Wells, 38, of Lampasas and CW2 Jamie Stepan, 31, of Killeen -- fired rockets that fended off a hostile crowd and killed Shiite fighters converging on the upturned helicopter, after it was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Lejeune Marines will head to Iraq

CAMP LEJEUNE - About 14,000 Marines and sailors based in North Carolina will head to western Iraq beginning in January, Camp Lejeune announced Wednesday.

The troops of the II Marine Expeditionary Force should be in control of its assigned area by late March, according to a statement from the Marines.

The group will include air and ground troops and support units. It’s referred to as II MEF (Forward) because it is smaller than a full Marine Expeditionary Force and larger than a Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

Most of the personnel involved will be from units based in North Carolina, though other Navy and Marine troops – including aviation units from Beaufort, S.C., and reservists – will be involved.
