My opinion is that this Major is a hero for getting up in front of the media WOLVES and telling his story. He should be given a medal! And all they are trying to do is call HIM a lier and discredit him!!! It is dispicable and I hope people will see how this is being treated and turn away from Kerry because this is how HE would treat our brave soldiers! I hate him and I hate the MSM!!!

It doesn't matter if the weapons removed were the EXACT weapons. The point is that the U.S. Military had a plan and procedures for handling the weapons. Kerry came out swinging saying the military (and Bush) was incompetent and did nothing to guard the weapons. Everyone knows that is not true now.

I tend to see it differently. I see a simple idiotic statement made by the Kerry campaign that somehow we were not in control of that dump and did NOTHING! to secure the explosives and ammo.

This revelation says what we already knew, that we did do things and that the area was secured enough to prevent the removal of 100s of tons of ordinance by enemy forces.

The looting angle does not explain the missing ordinance, but the destruction efforts by the troops plus the Russian repo efforts do lead one to believe the ordinance in question did not fall into enemy hands.

Not a simple cut and dried story, but also not a stake in the heart of the Bush campaign.

It seems to me that the folks most upset about this are republicans on the defensive.

The public does not see this as some major screwup. If the stuff had turned up in car bombs it might be a different story, but as of now, the car bombs have all been based on ersatz collections of arty shells and small aerial bombs looted from 1000s of small dumps that we most certainly missed in urban areas.

He is a great man. Wish we could send him good wishes some how; for his bravery, and his bearing during this press conference.

Bush’s Lack of Plan Has Made Soldiers Bear Burden of Overstressed Military. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told senators in early February that the U.S. military is so overstressed that he is using emergency powers to expand it by 33,000 troops and that he will increase it further if required. “There is no question that the Army is stressed,” Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the Army chief of staff, told a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee in January 2004. The Pentagon already has instituted “stop-loss” orders to maintain troop strength in Iraq and Afghanistan, preventing troops from retiring or leaving the service at the end of their enlistments, while “stop-move” holds them overseas beyond the original end of their tours. The Republican Governor of Minnesota was just on Fox explaining to the nice but somewhat dim Rick Fulbaum that the press conference showed at a minimum that our military had a plan they were executing, that information on the allegations raised is being gathered, and that Kerry was out making charges without proper information and that should give voters pause for one who would be president.

This news conference is turning into another bad day for Bush. Major says he is not qualified to say whether the ammo he removed is HMX or RDX. Why did they bring him to the conference in the first place? This is ugly and gives Kerry more film to use against Bush. WFT?

He said over and over that it was plastic explosive. From what I've read about RDX and HMX, they are powders that must be bound with a plasticizing agent in order to be shaped and used. The major doesn't give a s*** what kind of plastic explosive it was. And the reporters totally ignored the point that the seals they are referring to, those orange diamonds, are on more than just RDX and HMX.

And, in a sense, they are correct. They, like most Americans following this, would also ask the Major if some of this "bad stuff"--the HMX, for example---was part of that 250 tonnes he says his forces removed from the site.

The Major replied that this wasn't his area of expertiese. His deal was logistics---physically moving what his people found, whatever was "easily accessible"---and that follow-on forces were to go to the ammo dump where this stuff was placed to identify what was there.

In that sense, the MSM reporters there are correct. I think it's also fair to ask why someone who *could* directly speak to the full nature of what was removed hasn't been brought forward yet.
