Osama bin Laden tried to purchase the world's largest pearl, the Pearl of Allah, as a gift to Saddam Hussein "to unite the Arab cultures," and Hussein was prepared to accept, according to the pearl's owner.

Victor Barbish, who owns sixty-six percent of the pearl on behalf of his daughter, told WorldNetDaily he received an offer in 1999 from individuals who said they were "from bin Laden's group" to purchase the pearl for $60 million to give to Hussein as an overture of unity between al-Qaida and the Iraqi government.

Look at what I found here:

Azad Amiri, a petroleum broker who owns many service stations, throughout California, including in Kings Beach, said he would pay any bond due and would guarantee employment for his nephew Ali.

It's an article about his Iranian nephew Ali being deported back to Iran... News

WND excerpt relevant to the above:

Barbish claims Soria and Bhak received the offer in 1999 from bin Laden through Latif Faed, an Iranian immigrant who was starting a chain of gasoline-station stores in California, and Faed's friend Azad Amiri. He says Faed and Amiri told him they were a "direct connection" to bin Laden's people, and that two bin Laden agents would meet Barbish in Denver to ensure he had the pearl and coordinate a $12 million deposit toward its purchase.

I think the relation here, and the reason for the gift is that both Saddam and Bin Laden were in need of money in 1998. Bin Laden had the oil, operatives, and financial connections to help Saddam set up the oil for food scandal.

In exchange, some Al Qaeda linked financiers were included in the loop. Hence in '99 both Al Qaeda and Saddam became flush with money.

"So Saddam said no? If he said No - this is proof of what? That al-Qaeda failed to woo Saddam?

If Saddam said "yes", and Osama gave him the pearl, but then later they "broke up", does Saddam still get to keep the pearl ??? ....(it would have to be decided either by a Jerry Springer episode, or Judge Judy, with Jerry Spence , the guy with white hair and the tan leather fringed jacket, as Saddam's lawyer)...

"Both Barbish and Svihus say they reported the offer when it was received to the FBI and several other U.S. agencies in California, Washington, D.C. and Florida.

Barbish claims after several exchanges between himself, Soria, Latif Faed, and Muhammed Faed, a meeting with two bin Laden agents coming from overseas was set up around December, 1999. He says he told all parties involved he would want to meet personally with bin Laden before selling the pearl.

Barbish said he never heard anything further about the meeting. He said he was later told the two men, whose names he never knew, were caught trying to illegally enter the U.S. from Canada. "

THIS is why the transaction didn't go through, not because Saddam wasn't ready to accept Bin Laden's gift.

Saddam's agents were involved too.

As I said, READ the article. Long, but it's worth it.

If Saddam had accepted the jewel, that would mean something.

As in engaged maybe?

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I don't find anything credible about this story.

WND is probably just blowing smoke.

Bin Laden also offered Saddam a lovely skirt and sweater set to wear with the pearl.
