Vandals strike at GOP office
Santa Cruz Sentinal ^ | 10/26/04 | JONDI GUMZ and CATHY REDFERN

Posted on 10/26/2004 8:56:01 AM PDT by m1-lightning

By JONDI GUMZ and CATHY REDFERN Sentinel staff writers Scotts Valley police say they have no suspects in a case of campaign vandalism at the county’s Republican headquarters.

A chunk of concrete was tossed through the glass door at 5610 Scotts Valley Drive, knocking down a life-size cardboard poster of President Bush, some time after volunteers locked up at 8 p.m. Friday.

When workers returned at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, they found the door frame broken and two windows smashed.

"Emotionally it’s a blow," said Jane Armstrong of the Santa Cruz County Republican Central Committee. "I like to believe this is a free country. It’s disappointing to think people are intolerant."

The incident was the second in a week at the GOP office. Earlier in the week, a large sign was stolen from atop the building.

The Scotts Valley vandalism comes as the Bush campaign, citing incidents of violence at campaign offices around the country, is asserting Democratic partisans have deliberately tried to intimidate voters, potentially storing ammunition for future arguments about the fairness of the election.

On Monday, the Bush campaign provided a list of more than 40 examples it said had occurred since July, including the burglary from campaign offices of several items: two laptop computers in Seattle; a banner in Thousand Oaks; petty cash in Spokane, Wash.; as well as break-ins last Friday in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Cincinnati.

Also included were examples of lesser crimes including the defacement or theft of supporters’ lawn signs as well as broken windows, slashed tires, shots fired, bullet holes and thrown eggs at campaign offices.

The New York Times contributed to this report.

This from a town where the last issue they got emotional about was changing the UC Santa Cruz sports mascot to the banana slug?

Vote suppression can be explained by classifying the different efforts to undermine the vote into three categories.

Individuals who support one candidate and desire to suppress votes for the candidate's opponent can do so in a number of different ways. While there is no set formula for classifying acts of vote suppression, the following three categories help to distinguish the different techniques. Voters can be prevented from potentially voting for the other candidate
(1) by direct threats of intimidation
(2) by suppressing turnout through disinformation and scare tactics

(3) by efforts to keep the other candidate's message from being communicated.

didn't see a single Bush/Cheney sign, but I did see many Kerry/Edwards signs

Read this opinion from SF Making a Dent in Liberal Disinformation: Political Signs

"You won’t find a Bush bumper sticker on my vehicles or a sign in my yard, however. I see a lot of Kerry stickers and signs but few for Bush. True, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so a substantial Democratic majority is to be expected. But the last poll numbers for California I saw had Kerry at 49% and Bush at 46% in mid-August (although this reflects the varied demographics of Cal-ee-fornia). I would say the signage is 10-1 from my unscientific tally. Why the disparity when there is arguably only a small difference in the number of voters supporting each candidate?"

"I'm sure that the Socialists will claim that this is nothing more than Reichstag Fires."

Heh...

" The MSM does not want to report any of this. Imagine if it was the other way around...."

60 Minutes, Dateline, and 20/20 would ALL be doing shows on "the GOP's right wing disenfranchisement, intimidation of Democrat voters, and the raiding of Democrat headquarters --reminiscent of Genghis Khan..."

I guess the tolerant neo-Stalinist liberals are upset that any political party oppose them, huh?

You can bet if this was happening to your local Planned Parenthood or DNC political office the liberal pigs in the media would report it endlessly.

LOL, tactics plucked right from the Democrat's playbook.

More projection from the lovable sociapaths, kooks & loonies on the Left.

Thanks for the link. You quoted the author:

You won’t find a Bush bumper sticker on my vehicles or a sign in my yard, however.

His third reason is the reason I suspect to be the most significant as well:

Fear. A number of people I’ve talked to are afraid of putting a Bush sticker on their car because they worry that it will attract vandalism. The same with yard signs.
Indeed. I was born and raised in Santa Cruz and I'm all too familiar with the intolerance of the left.

It's not as bad as it seems. I believe there are valid reasons for the lack of signs -- The signs are either stolen or Bush/Cheney supports don't want to attract a very real concern of vandalism.
