"This week's issue of Time magazine (April, 2004) says Sen. John Kerry 'sought an annulment of his 18-year first marriage before marrying again.' News reports indicate, however, that Kerry didn't seek an annulment until after he married Teresa Heinz in a civil ceremony in 1995. Today's New York Times says Kerry 'sought an annulment from the church when he was divorced from his first wife.' Notice that neither Time nor the New York Times says that an annulment was granted. They say it was 'sought.'

I thought there was an article here on FR (Coulter?) that said for sure that he did NOT get an annulment.
Anyone else remember?
This is another case of two sets of rules. One for Dems, One for Repubs.
How many threads on Freepers have this theme. I would bet 90%. It is like we wake up everyday and post, "May God the Sky is Blue. It is Blue and the dems say it is Green. It is not green, it is blue." There IS media bias and we are living with Big Brother everyday, everywhere.
The sooner we all quite exclaiming, "There is Media Bias" and move to step number two. "The Media say the skyiis green, but it is blue therefore I am going to stop watching, buying or giving them any FINANCIAL and viewer support. Not only am I going to do it but I am going to join a national boycott to cut them off from my POCKETBOOK and my cable rating drain on the wires they use for ratings."
People I know Bush will be reelected with the grace of God and turnout but before 2008 we need to balance the media playing field or we will have Hillary in White House, Teddy in the UN and Bill on the Supreme Court.
Think it can't happen?
It's about as Biblical as it possibly could be. In fact, in the Gospel of Matthew, Christ specifically recognizes the case where a marriage may appear to exist but not exist in truth when he says that divorce is prohibited "except for porneia". "Porneia" means, not adultery ("adultery" in Greek is "moicheia"), but unchastity; an irregular or unlawful marriage arrangement, de facto "shacking up".
The term "annullment" is not really correct anyway. The correct term is a "Decree of Nullity"; a formal finding that no real Christian marriage ever existed (though a marriage did exist in civil law).
All very good questions, which need to be directed at Kerry and the Catholic church. The question is who is going to bell the cat? The MSM won't do it.
There's no concept of illegitimate children in the Catholic Church.
Yep, there's intense scrutiny of every facet of Bush's personal and political life, but virtually no examination whatsoever of Kerry's past. Just imagine how the media would run cover for Kerry if he were elected.
The word "illegitimate" has to do with law, and whether things are lawful. So in the Church, there is no law about whether children have more or less status depending on whether their parents were married. In other words, the Church renders this unto Caesar, for purposes of inheritance or whatever. And Caesar is happy to oblige.
The civil ceremony would be considered adultery until the first marriage dissolved.
Divorce or annulment is allowed based on abuse, lack of a desire to have children or adultery.
John had children with the other wife, so either she or he had an adulterous affair or was being abusive.
The only scenario I can come up with for annulment would be that when she went off, she physically attacked him and he had it documented and offered that as proof to the church for an annulment.
But he was in a state of adultery with the second woman if the first marriage was not annulled through the church. At least as far as the Catholic Church would be concerned as far as I know.
Dear nmh,
"From what I gather from Catholics an annulment wipes out the legitimacy of the marriage and it is 'anulled'. With this view of wiping out the 'marriage' then the children would be ILLegitimate since his first marriage in the Catholic church is not deemed legitimate hence neither would his children be then."
Are you paying attention to any of the folks who have corrected your failed understanding of Catholic teaching? When folks point out that you are wrong, do you even read their helpful comments?
Legitimacy obtains from civil law. Whether a marriage is sacramental or not, if it is legal, the children of it are legitimate.
Do you think that folks married in front of a Justice of the Peace don't have legitimate children? Do you think the Catholic Church thinks that?
