(CNN)..........The report that tons of high explosives were missing from a depot in Iraq provided campaign ammunition Monday, with Kerry launching a blistering attack on Bush. The Democrat called it "one of the great blunders of Iraq and one of the great blunders of this administration."
Late Monday, the mystery took another twist -- NBC News, which had a crew embedded with the U.S. military during the invasion, reported that the material had already vanished by the time American troops arrived there on April 10, 2003, the day after Baghdad fell. (Report: Explosives already gone when U.S. troops arrived) http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/10/26/iraq.explosives/index.html
The Bush camp wasted little time in firing back, firing off a statement saying that Kerry's criticism of the president over the missing material has "been proven false before the day is over."
"John Kerry's attacks today were baseless," Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt said. "He said American troops did not secure the explosives, when the explosives were already missing."
Schmidt also said that Kerry "neglects to mention the 400,000 tons of weapons and explosives that are either destroyed or in the process of being destroyed" in Iraq.
But Kerry senior adviser Joe Lockhart fired back with a statement of his own, accusing the Bush campaign of "distorting" the NBC News report.
"In a shameless attempt to cover up its failure to secure 380 tons of highly explosive material in Iraq, the White House is desperately flailing in an effort to escape blame," Lockhart said. "It is the latest pathetic excuse from an administration that never admits a mistake, no matter how disastrous."...
Lockhart did not elaborate on how the Bush campaign was distorting the NBC report.....

White House Downplays Missing Iraq Explosives
Passing the baton to you as I leave the scene for some shuteye .
Make no mistake about it.
The Liberals are traitors to America.
I'll send that to him
ping!
hopefully
Kerry is always ready to accept the worst reports (lies) about our troops.
Well, of course not. In order to do that, Joe Lockhart would've actually needed some facts to back him up. All he has is liberal lies.
I hope Fox and Friends grills the Kerry spokesperson on this today.
Kudos to NBC News for contradicting Kerry on the same day he sat down with supporter Katie Couric for an interview. At least NBC occasionally tries to be fair. I wish I could say that about the totally worthless news divisions at CBS and ABC.
BUMP!
I hope George W. Bush goes full steam ahead the next few days with an attack on Kerry for jumping all over this N.Y. Times report without checking it out first. This might even be worth a last-minute campaign ad.
If the NBC News bombshell is accurate, Bush needs to press this big-time because it shows exactly how Kerry is blaming Bush and blaming our military command for everything under the sun - whether it's true or not.
It's also important for Bush to keep this in the news because I'm sure there are still millions of Americans who heard about the original N.Y. Times report without hearing the NBC News report much later. I just found out about the NBC report a few minutes ago here on FR.
Any thinking person knew that Saddam was busy getting rid of any weapons he had while we were messing around with that useless UN. I would bet even Kerry knows that.
Have you see this. It's great!
CBS was going to try to make this like the "DUI" story next Sunday, too.
380 tons is not a lot of weapons when you think about how much a bomb weighs...
