LA's first GOP Senator since Reconstruction! They re-elected Mary Landrieu two years ago so maybe in a week's time the jinx will be broken? We'll see.

It shows David Vitter at 47%, Chris John at 18%, John Kennedy at 16%. An outright majority is not unthinkable.

I really hope Vitter can reach 50% this election, because if he doesn't, I think he will lose in the runoff, that's just the way Louisiana works.

Agreed. Just too many Rats in New Orleans. Here's to hoping Bush's coattails pull Vitter through.

i would get excited but i've been in louisiana too long. there'll be 45 million votes cast in new orleans and every one of them will be for democrats. people who knew napolean personally still vote in new orleans.

I disagree. Vitter can win a runoff. I'm not saying it will be easy, and I would vastly prefer that he win outright. But he's run a great race, and I have confidence in him.

Good news. Hopefully, there will be no need for a run off.

Vitter is benefiting from the fact that John and Kennedy have been sniping with each other as much as with him. Avoiding a run-off would be ideal and he just may do it. Judging by the attacks on Vitter, he must be darn close to 50%.

Our senate candidates are beginning to peak at the right moment. We could be electing a slate of conservative All-Stars this year: Burr, DeMint, Coburn, Martinez, Coors, and Vitter.

I'm beginning to worry about Bunning's KY seat, so this LA news is good!

If it turns out to be the case, my dear father will be smiling away in heaven....

47% isn't good enough.

I have to wonder if ironically Vitter can win a runoff only if Kerry is elected president. :( After a month of Kerry as president elect, LA voters will be looking to send a negative message to him.

Bunning will win. The margin is going to be more like 54-46 rather than the 65-35 it could have been, but it will still be a win.
