Under mounting political, legal and financial pressure, Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. yesterday backed away from its plan to carry a film attacking John F. Kerry's Vietnam War record, saying it would air only portions of the movie in an hour-long special scheduled for Friday.
"The experience of preparing to air this news special has been trying for many of those involved," Sinclair chief executive David D. Smith said in a statement. "The company and many of its executives have endured personal attacks of the vilest nature, as well as calls on our advertisers and our viewers to boycott our stations and on our shareholders to sell their stock."
Chad Clanton, a spokesman for the Kerry campaign, which had demanded equal time to respond to the planned airing of the 42-minute film "Stolen Honor," said Sinclair "has been all over the map on this issue. One thing that's certain is that they have a partisan agenda."
Andrew Jay Schwartzman, president of the nonprofit Media Access Project, called the Sinclair move "a surprising cave-in" and said the 62-station television company "clearly felt a lot of pressure and this is an attempt to find a face-saving way out."

Chad Clanton, a spokesman for the Kerry campaign, which had demanded equal time to respond to the planned airing of the 42-minute film "Stolen Honor," said Sinclair "has been all over the map on this issue.Talk about all over the map. First the Kerry campaign turned down an offer to rebute the documentary, then they wanted 60 minutes of air time for any subject they wanted, then they unleashed their legal minions to block the broadcast...

How long is the film?? Isn't it about an hour anyway. They'll get the good parts in no doubt. They never intended to show the whole film. They are not caving in as you put it. It was all democratic spin and thoroughly discussed here yesterday.

Are you sure? I hope you're right. He is right. Notice that the poster put is parentheses the statement by the DNC guy.
To: BJungNan
Yes, and was that before or after Clanton threatened Sinclair with retaliation?

No. The headline is misleading. Sinclair didn't cave on anything. Read the rest of the thread and the original Sinclair press release.

The bottom line is that the left got some of what it wanted. As it always does. What did they get? A bunch of FR's believing that Sinclair intended to show the entire film and now dissing Sinclair for backing down? I guess so.
But the fact remains that Sinclair originally said it would NOT present the entire film, but excerpts and discussion. Never mind that the democrats spun it as a 42 minute attack ad so they could influence sponsers and are now spinning that that Sinclair is 'caving in'. Nevermind the truth, just believe the spin.
To: Fatalis
They've never said they would air the entire video. From the beginning, it was to have been a 60-minute show, and they had offered Kerry a chance to use some of that time for a rebuttal! All this "Sinclair caved" is just so much caca del toro. Give them credit for standing up to the opposition as they have been.

Give them credit for standing up to the opposition as they have been. Amen. It is amazing how so many here will believe DEMOCRATS when quoted in a WASHINGTON POST article.
