MUNSTER -- It was just about a year ago that the Munster Republican Party was the victim of numerous thefts when more than 100 signs for Town Council candidate Helen Brown were stolen from front lawns throughout the community. The same thing appears to be happening again.
According to James Kaspar, chairman of Munster's Republican Central Committee, about a dozen signs have been taken during the past week, about one or two per day.
"Frankly, the first morning after this hit, I thought that we didn't want to have to go through this again," Kaspar said. "I have no theories, this is just someone who doesn't respect the First Amendment."
In the first case, eventually it was discovered that three local teenagers carted some of the signs off as a joke, although later more were reported missing. But with the latest thefts and the hotly contested upcoming elections drawing near, the party again is concerned. Republican candidate signs that had been placed earlier in the week were missing by Friday morning.
Pat Snyder's home on Hohman Avenue was among those hit. She had her President Bush sign taken, but not the sign supporting gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels. Several neighbors along Ridge Road also had Republican signs missing, but Kaspar said the Democratic signs still were in place.
"This is irritating, it's so small," Snyder said. "I know it's kids, and I'm bringing my signs in at night now, doggone it. They're not going to defeat me."
George Pluard, who lives on Howard Avenue, had signs supporting Bush, Daniels and U.S. Senate candidate Marvin Scott taken.
"I don't know how extensive this is," he said. "I'm not sure whether it is a prank or something to do with politics. We put up the signs to show support and political allegiance. I'm not sure how effective they are in swaying people's vote."
The cost to the Munster Republicans is about $6 per sign. Kaspar said Bush signs are the most frequent victims, with several signs supporting Daniels also gone.
"Signs don't vote," Kaspar said. "But of course, they remind people that the election is coming."
bump and ping
A couple of car batteries, and bare copper cable....
Electrify your signs.
No kidding.
Not only are signs being trashed,
but also cars bearing Bush/Cheney
bumper stickers.
Get one of those cheap shrieking alarms that work by breaking the magnetic seal--like the ones being peddled in those infomercials. Attach one part to the sign, the other to a post or tree that the sign is leaning against. Then just sleep downstairs near the floodlight switch for you yard. Sometime after midnight, when the alarm noise rips through the night air, throw on the lights, take a photo of the perps, and call the police. Most likely the perp is a son or daughter of a local RAT operative or official--if you expose them you might be able to hurt them at the polls.
"Electrify your signs."
Excellent idea. Or rig the exploding ink to color them the pink that they are. Shows that they really don't believe in free speach even though they scream the loudest that Christians are trying to infringe upon theirs.
It's the same story in Tampa, Florida.
Damn, that is good.
May I borrow it?
It has a curious "stealth" effect-- the colors are soothing... until the viewer recognizes just what is burning in the picture.
Thanks.
I am a victim of sign theft. I've had two Bush/Cheney signs stolen from my yard here in my rural Ohio community.
I have another one out, and let's just say I got the word out, and so far this one is still in my yard. One of the perks of living in a very country town, word travels fast.
I live in a solid D'rat county only because of the urban vote.
While driving through the city I see very, very few K/E signs. Most signs in yards are B/C. In the suburban/rural areas B/C signs far outnumber K/E signs.
In this elections it's clear that more people are proud to put out the B/C signs then the K/E crowd theirs.
I've also only seen two signs defaced - both B/C signs.
Go NC.
But the media won't say it.
Ditto in Orlando. Our entire College Park neighborhood was stripped last week.
These characters are actually going out at night and taking them down. I go back the next day and put them up. It's a game.
HArd to keep any Bush/Cheney signs up in my neck of the woods, suburban Philly....they're being
stolen regularly.

Epidemic of Campaign Vandalism Continues
Reports of such sign vandalism are flooding in from all over the country, along with far worse violence being perpetrated by Democrat partisans.

Yep, the 'Rats are specifically targeting Bush-Cheney signs all over the place... most likely union goons doing this.
