Where Were You In 1976?
Me

It was Carter Vs. Ford, so where were you during the course of that election and when Carter claimed his victory(unfortunately). It was a pretty close race.

I was even worse. I voted for Clinton in 92. I have had to get forgiveness for that. I voted for Dole in 96 and Bush in 2000.

Where was I in 1976? Let's see, I'm going to show my age... I was graduating from high school and embarking on my "lost year" before joining the Marine Corps.

I was watching Return to the Planet of the Apes in 1976. Does anyone else remember that show? Crappy Filmation animation, but the stories were good.

I remember the cartoon "Planet of the Apes" too, cool stories. I liked the one where they meet up with a fellow astronaut named "Brent" where he commented that he blasted off in 2079 and Cape Canaveral "was a museum." Do you also remember the show "Ark II?"

U.S. Navy - Nuclear Power School in Mare Island, CA. The Enlisted Mens club (next door to the Nuc School) had strippers... Ah, those were the non-PC days....

Just prior to this, Jimmy Carter's nephew was kicked out of Nuc School for smoking pot. Signs of genetic deficiency...

I remember being tired of all the stupid "We need Jimmy Carter" ads that ran on WTOG and other Florida stations. Listening to how great Carter had done in Georgia and how Georgia was this up-and-coming place on the news--I will never forget how they were talking about all the good impact he'd had on the environment, which for some reason was way important to me back then. I guess watching crying Indian ads made me think that was what the election must be all about.

I also remember asking my dad who he voted for (I could not, though I did vote in Brooksville, Florida's Weekly Reader elections for Ford). I also remembered his fury after Ford pardoned Nixon and amnestied a good chunk of the draft dodgers, when Pop said "We had to get that thief out of there. I voted for Carter. Maybe next time we'll get someone good instead of someone else."

And of course, Dad cursed a blue streak when Carter pardoned ALL the dodgers within a year, pardoned Tokyo Rose, too, then sold out the country to give back the Panama Canal.

Bad music (Ramones excluded) and even worse clothing.

Good Lord, man! Don't you realize Zeppelin was still rocking?

But I do remember my powder blue leisure suit, so the clothing part I'll hafta give ya.

I voted for Ford and waited for him to peak in time for the election. Umm, not quite. I was surprised that the Nixon pardon and the SNL parodies would take quite that much a toll. My brother, a broadcaster (conservative) and news junkie like me, died the previous year. I remember realizing how surprised my brother would have been at the dem. choice of candidate and at the outcome. Jimmah seemed pretty kindly and full of smiles. Then he became famous for the misery index. Now he's a nightmare.

Sophomore in college. Learning a lot about various adult beverages. I remember watching the debates and Ford's incredible blunder. Bought the issue of Playboy to read the Carter interview (well, that was one of the reasons). Voted for the first time, absentee, for Carter. (I officially apologize. It was Patty McGuire's fault - those eyes! They made me do it!)

It was a good lesson for me. I've never voted for another democrat.

I was in law school. I remember my intense disappointment when Carter won. Beyond partisanship, that was one race where I was quite certain that the inferior man had won. About a third of my class at the University of Michigan law school was for Ford, a percentage for a Pubbie probably not since matched. Maybe it was a home state thingie.

I was in pre-school, but I do have a vivid memory of being allowed to stay up late and go to my dad's campaign headquarters - local politics- and there was a lady there giving out little bags of peanuts with the words 'Carter promises' written on them.

1976 would have been Ford's if he hadn't been a dumb-dumb and pardoned Nixon BEFORE the election. The October surprise that year was in September and it was when our own candidate shot himself in the foot. The rest was downhill after that.

I was in 5th or 6th grade and I remember the convention, and "the Grin will win" and didn't really understand what all was going on then.

I also campaigned for J. P. Hammerschmidt against Bill Clinton in a US Congressional race. Clinton lost big time.

Clinton lost to Hammerschmidt in 1974, not 1976. And it was a close election too. Clinton was elected AR attorney general on the day that Carter was elected President. Clinton then lost his governorship (temporarily) on the day Reagan was elected President.

I was in my 2nd year of college and seriously thinking about a career as a US Army Officer, via ROTC. I barely thought about politics....then.

Me, too. It was my first presidential vote. I also believed Ted Kennedy was going to revolutionize health care. I woke up about 1980.
