A Sub Called 'HMS Leftover' (Canadians are very thrifty!)
The Toronto Star ^ | October 16, 2004 | Kevin Donovan

Complaint reports catalogue a litany of major problems. Vessels plagued by faulty equipment, lack of spare parts.

Hatches that wouldn't close. Rusting battery cables. Wiring schematics that couldn't be found. No spare parts. Torpedo tubes that clamped shut in warm water. Faulty computers. Exhaust valves cracking. A mystery dent. Trouble with the escape tower. Even floors coming apart at the seams.

These are just some of the problems Canada's four used submarines encountered before the electrical fire Oct. 5 that killed Lieut. Chris Saunders, crippled HMCS Chicoutimi and caused the sub program to be docked indefinitely.

Submarine complaint reports — written by crew, officers and engineers — show that a litany of annoying glitches and serious safety issues have barraged the small fleet. Solve one problem, another takes its place.

But from the day Canada considered buying the subs, nobody thought of having a third-party examine the equipment to assess the risk of the purchase and figure out just how much work had to be done to make them safe. That's routine when somebody buys a house; it wasn't done with the multi-million-dollar subs.

A former high-ranking defence department official involved in the purchase said yesterday that Canadian navy brass were content with their own experts.

"Nobody suggested we bring somebody else in. If they had, we would have," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

I expect as much from a country that blocks reception of Fox News.

"Hatches that wouldn't close."

Gosh! I'm no expert, but that seems like a very important thing in a submarine.

Do the screen doors close?

Why, The French Canadians in charge up there wouldn't use them to fight anyone....

At the moment, we're the only enemy Canada has the courage to treat rudely and cast insults toward...

The Canadians have a long history of buying surplus British naval vessels. Caveat emptor

Yes, but this time they bought scrap -- and are paying the price for incredibly inept staffing.

The state of the Canadian Forces is pathetic in the extreme; and the Uniformed Officials responsible for this 4 sub requisition should be summarily dismissed for gross incompetence.

......buying surplus British naval vessels ......??? are you guys sure you're talking boats here? This report:

Rusting battery cables. Wiring schematics that couldn't be found.
No spare parts. Exhaust valves cracking. A mystery dent.

This sounds more like a '57 Austin Healey

Military on the cheap. The entire Canadian military should be relocated to the US, given American citizenship, and be treated the way warriors are supposed to be treated. Canada doesn't deserve them.

The real question remains: Who in the Canadian Navy inspected these 4 pig-boats and deemed them a bargain?

I'm guessing some smarmy Quebecois refused to read the English "as is" contract clause before approving the deal.

Well, the Canadians have been known to buy vessels for parts too. Usually they tow those across the Atlantic.

The larger question becomes how did this nation become more incompetent and irrational than any country in the Third World in only two generations?

"...The larger question becomes how did this nation become more incompetent and irrational than any country in the Third World in only two generations?..."

In the late 50's, the Conservative Party under John Diefenbaker cancelled the AVRO Arrow program - a giant leap in areonautical technology. The Arrow was a Mach-2 fighter-intercepter, and was the best in the world. Worldwide sales were expected to be in the billions, and Canada would have become a wealthy Nation - not to mention a serious regional force.

With the economic recession that was occurring, the people turned left, and the Liberals, NDP, and other loony-leftists went Socialist.

Having lived through that period in Canadian history, it is my personal opinion that the Arrow was killed due to USA pressure. The US didn't want superior aircraft in the hands of God-knows-who. That's just my opinion----I could be right!...............FRegards

This is what I've been ranting about in these forums since I first heard about this.

Why buy a sub no longer considdered good enough to use by the seller?

In fact, why would Canada buy a sub at all?
Its not like they would ever commit troops to anything
that required risk....?
