MRC's Brent Baker reports that the media elite typically disliked the L word last night. Newsweek Managing Editor Jon Meacham contended on MSNBC before the debate that the liberal tag "seems a little tinny these days. I think it's a more serious time." He argued that if Bush "simply throws red meat out that's trouble." After the debate, Boston Globe reporter Nina Easton complained on CNN that Republican have "ridden that tired horse of calling Kerry a liberal from Massachusetts and out of the mainstream, which doesn't, I don't think, play that well to swing voters."
While it's true that merely using the word "liberal" might seem a bit old, it might play well with swing voters if Bush can explain what the L word means: higher taxes, more government bureaucracy, lowered defense spending, seeing the leading foreign policy crisis as the lack of arms control and global warming agreements....
PS: Karl Rove must consider it a great strategic success that Kerry hasn't really been suggesting too hard that Bush is too conservative, something the media love saying about Republicans.
Alan Colmes and Helen Thomas seem proud of it. Easy to say when neither is running for public office.
They're not liberals. They're Socialists. We should start calling them what they are.
Well, if the name fits!
Kerry looked like a fool in the debates when he kept saying "It's not about labels" and "My oponent is trying to scre you with labels."
They were canned and smarmy. A failed effort to muddy the waters surrounding his flaming liberalism.
You've got to be a fool to register to vote anywhere but your town hall.
Ah a liberal by any other name is still a liberal. Call them a socialist and they get upset even thought that is what they represent. Tell then they are trying to take from the rich and give to the poor and that it is stealing and they say no not when the government does it. What logic, because the government does it its ok.
Just exactly what do they want to be called?
Dumba$$es?
Communists?
Which word do "they" find least offensive
Despite what the MSM says most Americans despise liberals and will not vote for them. Say what you want about Bill Clinton, but he was smart and savvy enough to avoid the liberal tag, and he convinced enough voters that he was a moderate governor from the south. John Kerry is too refined and snobby to pull off the same stunt Clinton did. It doesn't help that he's from Massachusetts and has a voting record even more leftist than America's most prominent liberal Teddy Kennedy.
Liberals seem to think that the term itself is a perjorative. That simply isn't true. It is just that most Americans dislike the two things that are most easily associated with liberal policies: higher taxes and more government involvement.
"...Which word do "they" find least offensive...."
I think the word is "progressive". No matter what the label...it's all the same. They're basically communist/socialists. The name just changes every couple of years I guess to confuse the GOP. Somebody should tell them it isn't working.
They call themselves "progressives." That will be till they've become hated under that name too, then they'll change it again.
"... most Americans despise liberals and will not vote for them..."
That's the reason Dean was dumped. He allowed that label to be used as a description of him. The media caught on and realized he could not be elected as a "liberal". Arriva J F Kerry....a progressive!
Define the ideologies of the neoMarxist & pro-socialist, then compare them with the Democrat party platform and the demagogueral partylines of the political "liberal."
"Liberal" equals Leftist.
I actually had a co-worker admit that he is really a socialist.
Start calling them what they are communist/fascists that'll realy makem happy !
Or worse. Acutally according to the original definitions of the word "liberal", most American conservatives would be considered liberal.
And in Europe and beyond the term liberal is still often used to describe what would be considered rightwing in the US.
Hence, for example, "liberal reformers" in Russia seeking to dismantle socialism.
Exactly... pubbies seem AFRAID to use the right word... useing the WORD... could solve a multitude of problems.. liberals is too vague and wrong. Liberals are about a liberal as a Nazi which was socialism also.. not fascism.. Asking the question.. Are you a SOCALIST ?... would cut through the BS and cause most of them to hem and haw and be totally unprepared for the "you know communism "IS" socialism"... also.. How far from Stalin are you in socialistic circles..?
