Arrested in Hamburg.

This is where Atta and the boys came from and 911 was hatched.

Kerry will be really pissed about this...it must mean that Germany is in some way fighting the war on terror that President Bush is leading.

Yes! This guy looks familiar to me. He had a hand in 9/11 I believe. I will have to research more before I can say for sure, though. This is a GREAT catch, indeed!!!

We are cleaning out the terrorists:

Bush strategy of multifront war weakens rebels in Afghanistan

And elsewhere, especially in Iraq.

There's been a lot of this going on in the last few days (including a charity scam in the USA that was busted yesterday). This is more of the "nothing" that Kerry claims is being accomplished in the war against terror.

9/11 link confirmed.

"The CIA's attempts to enlist Mamoun Darkazanli were initiated in late 1999, at a time when three of the four Hamburg students who would later pilot the hijacked planes were first learning of the hijacking plot at an al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan. Darkazanli, 44, has acknowledged knowing the three pilots, Mohamed Atta, Marwan Al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah, with whom he attended the same radical Hamburg mosque, Al Quds, and shared several common friends in this city's sizable but insular Muslim community."

Of course the Germans will let him go in a few months, just like they did the guy convicted of 9-11 involvement, after his lawyers point out that the evil Guantanemo-running Americans were involved with collecting the evidence against him.

Not only is this a great catch, but this guy probably has a lot more intelligence -- about 9/11 in particular -- than most other terrorists. The Germans better not screw this up. His feet need to be held to the fire, so we can learn more about the build up/preparations for 9/11 and post-9/11 operations as well.

Al Qaeda Suspect Detained in Germany

German authorities said Friday they have detained a Syrian-born German suspected of being a leading figure in Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network with the aim of extraditing him to Spain.

A court in Hamburg, northern Germany, said it had issued an arrest warrant for Mamoun Darkazanli. He is accused of being "one of the key figures of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and providing logistical and financial support for this organization since 1997 in Spain, Germany and Britain."

He is believed to have had ties with the so-called Hamburg cell that allegedly produced three of the Sept. 11 suicide hijackers.

Court spokeswoman Sabine Westphalen said in a statement that Darkazanli had been arrested after a formal request from Madrid.

She said he was accused in Spain of "membership in a terrorist organization," which in Spain can carry a 12-year prison sentence.

"He is believed to have been the constant interlocutor and assistant of Osama bin Laden in Germany and to have been particularly involved in the transfer of documents and the payment of bills," Westphalen said.

She said the Spanish authorities believed Darkazanli was involved in buying a ship -- reportedly an ocean-going cargo freighter -- for bin Laden and had traveled to Kosovo in 2000 on behalf of Al-Qaeda. She did not give details.

Westphalen said three final conditions had to be met for his extradition to Spain -- a further order from a Spanish court, the approval of that order by the Hamburg court and a green light from the German government.

In Sept. 2001, US President George W. Bush froze the assets of the Mamoun Darkazanli Import-Export Company, along with those of 26 other individuals and groups he said were linked to terrorism.

"al-qaida" + arrest - 82,300 hits
"al qaeda" + arrest - 204,000 hits

Thank you Germany! It's good to hear they haven't completely absolved themselves from any action against terror.

I am still hearing a lot from German aquaintances that the many citizens are unhappy about not being a part of the war on terror. It's good to know we have some support there.
