Poll: Catholics Trending Towards Bush
NewsMax ^ | 10/10/04 | Fr. Michael Reilly

Posted on 10/10/2004 11:21:27 AM PDT by wagglebee

NewsMax.com's Fr. Michael Reilly has his eye on the latest developments with one of the most hotly contested demographic groups in this year's election.

President Bush has opened a wide lead over John Kerry among Catholic voters, according to a new poll reported by the Times of Trenton, and this could help the President in a swing state like New Jersey with 3.4 million Catholics.

Forty percent of New Jersey residents are Catholic.

The Barna Research Group, which focuses on a Christian audience, found Bush leading Kerry among Catholics 53 to 36 percent. The same survey in May showed Bush with a much narrower 48 to 43 percent lead.

While Catholics have traditionally voted for Democrats, they've trended towards the GOP in recent decades, particularly as national Democrats have increasingly taken left-wing stands on social issues.

Catholics have been identified by both parties as the key to capturing several swing states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan - and now even New Jersey.

While the American bishops have not openly condemned Kerry for his pro-abortion position, enough of them have addressed the topic to raise doubts about Kerry in the minds of Catholic voters.

While polls indicate that Catholics do not support denying pro-abortion politicians communion, they seem increasingly willing to apply their own sanctions by voting for their opponents.

As Bishop John M. Smith of the Diocese of Trenton put it back in March, "When we vote those people back into office, whom do we have to blame but ourselves?"

Tsunami! It can be done very simply: you are paying to reinforce your children's education in Catholic teachings, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and John Kerry's politics are colliding on the issue of abortion. IF the teacher feels she should vote for Kerry, that's on her conscience. You don't want her political views to contradict the Christ's teachings, those of the Church, and yours.

I'm Catholic too, and I think it's a shame that ANY priest in the Roman Catholic Church would support Kerry. Kennedy's plank (and the Democrat Party nowadays) obviously contradicts the Church's teachings. (abortion, acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle, etc.)

Yes, I do think Communists infiltrated our Church, and are doing Satan's work to try to destroy His House from within. (Just like they're trying to do to the USA) As we know (or should know) the devil will not succeed.

Did you know that I heard on O'Reilly's show, (when I still watched it) that the more traditional, conservative dioceses do NOT have any problems with the number of priests? These are the ones that stick to Church teaching, no if's, and's, or but's; the ones who have had no priests involved in the sexual scandals that have plagued other areas in the country.

Have you complained to your bishop about this priest?

The entire parish is being watched right now and there is a pretty good size group of us who are fighting the fight.

I have a sisterinlaw who says she was born a Catholic and a democrat. At one point we agreed not to talk any politics whatsoever because I just couldn't reason with her. She also believes in abortion. I sent her the video of Zell Miller at the Presidents convention. I figured she would never speak to me again. LOL. She actually called me and thanked me and told me she and her hubby were gonna change their vote to President Bush.I nearly fainted. hehe

I think that is half the problem with "us".
We tolerate this kind of stuff and pass it off.
I think we all should "make waves",
mkuch more so than we have in the past.

Kerry couldn't have come across as more of a slimy fraud than in the last debate. "Let me first say that I have SO much respect for your beliefs and faith.....(that I'm going to completely stomp all over them, but will be respecting" them as I do so).

Good to hear that.

You know something else? I've noticed that a lot of our seminarians and newly ordained priests tend to be more conservative than their predecessors in the 60s-70s. At least I've noticed this in my diocese. The last pastor we had (who was ordained in 1985) revived the First Friday Perpetual Adorations for instance. (and he was very devoted to the Blessed Mother--I guess because his mom's name was Mary too. ;) )

Pray for our parish everyone--we haven't had a permanent priest here since June--pray that we get a good priest who loves the Lord and His Church very much. (and loves kids too, because we have a school)

Thanks.

He respects Christians, he would just prefer it if more of them butchered their babies. That way, in a generation or so, the left wouldn't have to deal with a bunch of "Bible thumpers" ruining their Marxist agenda.

sKerry has an agenda which included the complete destruction of America's Judeo-Christian culture.

I doubt that. Kerry himself is so shallow that his agenda likely doesn't extend beyond getting himself elected.

His aiders and abetters, though; now, that's a whole 'nother story...

I would find another church or possibly another Catholic school. If you have to drive 15 minutes or so further so be it. I got so sick of listening to a priest consistantly talk about how greatness of the UN (he barely mentioned God during the sermons) that I joined another church and left a comment telling them why.

Many of our fellow freepers need to remember that Dubya is the one who belied the notion of the GOP as being the Know-Nothing party. Unfortunately if many of our non-Catholic freepers were in charge, they would have thrown out Bush
