Poll: Catholics Trending Towards Bush
NewsMax ^ | 10/10/04 | Fr. Michael Reilly

Posted on 10/10/2004 11:21:27 AM PDT by wagglebee

NewsMax.com's Fr. Michael Reilly has his eye on the latest developments with one of the most hotly contested demographic groups in this year's election.

President Bush has opened a wide lead over John Kerry among Catholic voters, according to a new poll reported by the Times of Trenton, and this could help the President in a swing state like New Jersey with 3.4 million Catholics.

Forty percent of New Jersey residents are Catholic.

The Barna Research Group, which focuses on a Christian audience, found Bush leading Kerry among Catholics 53 to 36 percent. The same survey in May showed Bush with a much narrower 48 to 43 percent lead.

While Catholics have traditionally voted for Democrats, they've trended towards the GOP in recent decades, particularly as national Democrats have increasingly taken left-wing stands on social issues.

Catholics have been identified by both parties as the key to capturing several swing states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan - and now even New Jersey.

While the American bishops have not openly condemned Kerry for his pro-abortion position, enough of them have addressed the topic to raise doubts about Kerry in the minds of Catholic voters.

While polls indicate that Catholics do not support denying pro-abortion politicians communion, they seem increasingly willing to apply their own sanctions by voting for their opponents.

As Bishop John M. Smith of the Diocese of Trenton put it back in March, "When we vote those people back into office, whom do we have to blame but ourselves?"

The Democrat party was built on pandering to special interest groups. Their problem is that pandering to some of these special interests involve offending others. Thus when they persuaded southern blacks that they were somehow the party of black liberation (although historically the Republicans had freed the blacks and southern Democrats had then built the Jim Crow system), they eventually managed to offend a large majority of southern whites.

In pandering to the feminist vote, the Dems got solidly behind abortion. Now they are in the process of offending large numbers of pro-life Americans, including Catholics and Evangelicals. Kerry has been especially clumsy when he tries to speak out of both sides of his mouth.

Frankly, the Dems are reaping what they deserve. Sometimes the distinction between pandering to voting blocs and serving your constituents is a fine one, but not in these instances.

Finally, common sense developing...I have often asked my Catholic friends how they can reconcile their religious faith with voting for a politician who supports abortion. I have never gotten a straight answer.

Actually, not entirely true....Bishops of SC, NC, and our wonderful Donohue here in GA were pretty damn straight forward on this.

Our priest and staff are very liberal, but our parish is overwhelmingly Bush...in fact I have yet to see 1 Kerry sticker at any mass yet, but there must be close to 100 Bush stickers at each mass.

Wore a Bush shirt to teach CCD today and one of my students parents said, jokingly I think "Politically indoctinating our kids to day??"

And I said, "I stopped trying to be non-partisan when Father and staff stopped...when they decide to stop, I'll stop. Until then, Bush in '04"

Not surprising - most Catholics are decent, hard-working people who have a much stronger belief in the teachings of the Church than the people who run the Church. How anybody can vote for a person who says his basic religious beliefs don't apply to his decision making process is beyond me.

CONTACT YOUR DIOCESE AND MAIL THE OPEN LETTER
Dioceses By State

The John Kerry for President Web site proclaims that Senator Kerry “will only nominate individuals to the federal bench whose records demonstrate ... the right to choose”. Removing political correctness from that statement, Senator Kerry, you have announced that you will only support people to the Federal Judiciary who support killing unborn children. Yet, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops mandates that:

“the killing of an unborn child is always
intrinsically evil and can never be justified”

. . . and that those “who formulate laws . . .
have an obligation in conscience to work toward
correcting morally defective laws, lest they be
guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning
against the common good”.

Senator Kerry, two of the most capable lawyers that we know — who are also Catholics faithful to the Bishops’ pro-life mandate — are Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon and noted attorney Philip Moran. Your litmus test would bar these and many other highly qualified people from the judiciary. Why do you, Senator Kerry, have a “litmus test” for judicial candidates that discriminates against Faithful Catholics?

This letter is not on behalf of or in opposition to your candidacy, but I am asking you to announce today that you will not impose any abortion litmus test on candidates for the Federal Judiciary ... especially those who are Faithful Catholics.

Signed,

Raymond Flynn

My daughters attend a Catholic elementary school.

On Friday my 7th grade daughter told me that her teacher told the class that she would be voting for Ralph Nader or John Kerry.

First, the teacher should not be revealing her political positions to her class. Second, it is indefensible for a Catholic to support Nader or Kerry -- particularly, a Catholic teacher in my daughers' Catholic elementary school.

I'm considering a complaint to the teacher or the school principal. My wife tells me not to make waves.

Except for high school government classes, I don't think it's ever appropriate for a teacher to discuss personal political beliefs in a classroom setting. All this does is lead students to alter their own beliefs to make points with the teacher.

Same way with Black Evangelicals. It's called choosing money over morality, entitlements over self-respect.

I wouldn't let that go. My kids go to a private Christian school and if the teacher told one of them that they were voting for John Kerry we would definitely have a problem.

And after you go to the principal I'd consider going to the school board. (Our Catholic schools in this area have school boards.)

Please get back with us a give us a report on what happened.

This is wonderfully informative but I fear worse than useless. Rather than calling for Kerry's "promise" to appoint neutral judges, we should be asking all U. S. bishops to do exactly what St. Louis' bishop did--remind Catholics that they commit grave sin by voting for someone with a history of anti-life voting. Even if I BELIEVED Kerry were capable of honoring a promise to appoint PRO-LIFE judges, he'd still be unfit for command of this country. I like Ray Flynn, but he hasn't yet smelled the roses. The Catholic-Democrat connection is D-E-A-D, and looking for excuses to consider Kerry seems to be part of the same sin as voting for him without demanding pledges. Anyone's conscience or common sense out there telling him Kerry'll keep a promise?

I'm chair of our Catholic School Board and I would have a problem with that. Per the catechism, it is a mortal sin to knowingly vote for a pro abortion candidate over a pro life candidate. Your teacher is advocating a sinful position.

I think it is a better example for your children to make waves rather then just sitting back. When my children were in school I was very pro-active and so are my children today. Don't let this teacher win. She should know better.

I just came from a Catholic Church where the priest mentioned in the sermon that abortion is like child sacrifice. He mentioned the practice of sacrificing the firstborn male bay in Carthage, and he said that's why God told the Israelites to wipe out the Carthagenians. OUCH. Now that's forthright.
