On Friday my 7th grade daughter told me that her teacher told the class that she would be voting for Ralph Nader or John Kerry.
First, the teacher should not be revealing her political positions to her class. Second, it is indefensible for a Catholic to support Nader or Kerry -- particularly, a Catholic teacher in my daughers' Catholic elementary school.
I'm considering a complaint to the teacher or the school principal. My wife tells me not to make waves.
Except for high school government classes, I don't think it's ever appropriate for a teacher to discuss personal political beliefs in a classroom setting. All this does is lead students to alter their own beliefs to make points with the teacher.
I wouldn't let that go. My kids go to a private Christian school and if the teacher told one of them that they were voting for John Kerry we would definitely have a problem.
MAKE WAVES !! MAKE WAVES !!
And after you go to the principal I'd consider going to the school board. (Our Catholic schools in this area have school boards.)
Please get back with us a give us a report on what happened.
I'm chair of our Catholic School Board and I would have a problem with that. Per the catechism, it is a mortal sin to knowingly vote for a pro abortion candidate over a pro life candidate. Your teacher is advocating a sinful position.
I think it is a better example for your children to make waves rather then just sitting back. When my children were in school I was very pro-active and so are my children today. Don't let this teacher win. She should know better.
Make waves, sir. This should not be allowed to go unchecked. Please, for your daughter's sake, make waves and let us know how it plays out.
our kids are in Catholic school, and i would have your daughter ask, if she feels comfortable, how this teacher can justify voting for a candidate that violates the Church's mandate on abortion. The kids at my kids schools are always agitating to try to get the teachers to say whom they will be voting for, but normally the teachers demur and say they won't say. THAT is preferable to a teacher just out and out saying she intends to vote for a PRO abort pol, while teaching in a catholic school. sure she can vote for whom she pleases, but seems she should keep her mouth shut about it.
Make waves. What you tolerate you condone. You must set the example for your daughter.
You had BETTER make waves.
You are paying for her education. Are you paying for her teacher to share her anti-Catholic views?
At this young age?!
Definitely make waves, you are in a private Catholic school, you CAN make waves.
When you vote for Nader or Kerry you are voting/supporting abortion!
Catechism of the Catholic Church and what it says about those who support abortion
Make waves.
Tsunami! It can be done very simply: you are paying to reinforce your children's education in Catholic teachings, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and John Kerry's politics are colliding on the issue of abortion. IF the teacher feels she should vote for Kerry, that's on her conscience. You don't want her political views to contradict the Christ's teachings, those of the Church, and yours.
I think that is half the problem with "us".
We tolerate this kind of stuff and pass it off.
I think we all should "make waves",
mkuch more so than we have in the past.
I would find another church or possibly another Catholic school. If you have to drive 15 minutes or so further so be it. I got so sick of listening to a priest consistantly talk about how greatness of the UN (he barely mentioned God during the sermons) that I joined another church and left a comment telling them why.
