Gibson's Attempt to Influence Debate (Vanity)
NY Times ^ | 10/08/04

Posted on 10/08/2004 10:25:07 PM PDT by huac

Moderator Gibson decides that this is to be the final question of the second Presidential Debate:

"Q. President Bush, during the last four years, you have made thousands of decisions that have affected millions of lives. Please give three instances in which you came to realize you had made a wrong decision and what you did to correct it."

In a debate with no high points, the final question was one last chance to stump the President. Gibson chooses a question which is designed to put Bush on the defensive, hopefully having to answer for mistakes, and allowing Kerry the last word criticizing President Bush, making a striking final impression.

No I hadn't noticed. Was she just "given" that question?

"I was thinking of O'Neill, the treasury secty." Trasportation Secretary (and Bubba holdover) Mineta comes to mind as well.

Thank you for the clarification, perhaps should have been called vanity with supporting documents.

Glad that you out the thread into perspective.

"I groaned when I heard that question and screamed at the TV, "What a loaded question...".

It's very sad that the moderators so far have brazenly favored Kerry with softer questions. It's like asking that other famous question: "Have you stopped beating your wife yet"? It's presumptuous and there is no good way to answer it unless you first qualify it as a loaded question. To his great credit, Bush did just that when he gently brought to light that the question was a deception.

Well, they said everyone turned in two questions and he chose 18 questions out of the batch and then the person who asked it was to read it back -- exactly as first written. On Nightline he was talking about some of the other questions they received and sounded to me like he chose one's he thought Bush wouldn't do well on... there was a lot more on the country and economy than Iraq.

I believe the question wasn't intended to ask Kerry to name three things Bush has done wrong. He took it upon himself to answer the question that way. The question was directed at "you" and that "you" was only the President because of the rotation of the order as to who got asked next. It could easily have been asked of Kerry first and it would have fallen on Kerry to answer with three things he has done wrong (like voting against the first Gulf War even when Bush 41 had the Grand Alliance and had passed the "Global Test").

It reminds me of an old joke from Russia under Gorbachev. A Russian is visiting the United States. He is seeing a protestor in Lafayette Park protesting against President Reagan. His guide points out that "See, here in America we are free to publicly criticize President Reagan even in the capitol of the United States." To which the Russian tourist replies "That is nothing, we have that same freedom back in Russia. We, too are free to criticize President Reagan in our capitol city of Moscow."

The intent of the question was to ask each of them to name three things they have done wrong. It shows Kerry's low character that he named things Bush did wrong -- and it is a HUGE gaffe. But let's see how much is made of it in the Media compared to Bush's minor slip of the tongue saying "Internets."

I thought the question at the end for Bush was OK. The first question was to Kerry on flip flopping and I think that set him back, and set the tone for the debate. Kerry never recovered. Bush Wins!

So it was her question. She sounded nice enough asking it and sincere about it. I didn't recognize it for the land mine that it was and I at first thought Bush was demeaning her. But.....when sKerry stood up to speak, I knew exactly what the wise President had done. I was just suprised he questioned the lady's integrity right in front of everyone.

When this question was asked, I thought to myself, why not ask ,"Mr. President, now that you have quit beating Laura, are you sorry for your mistakes?"
