A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

If this keeps up, it's Bush-Cheney in a landslide

by JohnHuang2

There were many surprises in tonight's debate. First, viewers were shocked to learn John Edwards was still on the ticket. Secondly, the ambulance-chaser was shocked he didn't put Cheney away -- away in an ambulance. The headline in tomorrow's papers? Principal Disciplines Troubled School Boy. Half hour into the debate, from the look on his face, Edwards yearned for an Exit Strategy. (No word yet on how many Democrat suicides tonight.)
Again, the stakes couldn't be higher in Tuesday's face-off, with Vice President Gravitas driving home the message that the world is, believe it or not, safer without Saddam in power and John Edwards, a shyster lawyer impersonating the Breck Girl, fresh from a bikini wax, seeking to clarify all 11 of Kerry's positions on Iraq. His latest is that the Iraq war was all some huge mistake and that he stands by his vote for this huge mistake plus his vote to deny funding this huge mistake and would do it again today before he wouldn't and that troops dying in this mission are not dying for a huge mistake because dying for the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time is the right thing to do though Iraq has nothing to do with combatting terrorists which is why Iraq is filled with terrorists including al-Qaeda which hated Saddam who hated al-Qaeda which is why al-Qaeda is fighting on behalf of Saddam. It's all so very clear, said Edwards, and it's why America hungers for John Kerry's consistency on Iraq. Edwards insisted Bush and Cheney can not be trusted with the security of this country because they won't fight sworn enemies of America like . . . Halliburton! And if that's not scary enough, Cheney voted against Headstart! Against Meals-on-wheels! Against the Martin Luther King holiday!
(We were about 2 minutes into the debate. It was at this point that Democrats launched an email chain declaring Edwards the winner.)
Like Kerry, Edwards vowed to hunt down al-Qaeda wherever it is -- wherever it is! No matter where 'wherever' is, unless wherever's in Iraq, which is a huge mistake only the French and Germans can fix. Edwards, who calls Iraq a huge diversion, said Bush had not sent enough troops to this huge diversion. Democrats also say that if Bush keeps sending so many troops to this huge diversion we'll have to bring back the draft which they say they oppose which is why they're proposing it.
Then Edwards let word slip that Kerry had served in Vietnam, although rumors were already swirling. (Indeed, some video game company in New York is marketing a game that allows players to re-enact Kerry's Swift Boat career in Vietnam. The game is over in 4 seconds.)
Breck Girl noted Kerry's "the one candidate who's led troops into battle. He was a prosecutor putting people behind crime . . . behind, behind bars." Asked by Moderator Gwen Ifill to explain how he differs from Cheney -- without mentioning John Kerry -- Edwards noted that "one thing that John Kerry would agree with . . . "
Moderator: "You just used John Kerry's name."
Edwards: "Oh, I'm sorry! I broke the rules!"
Edwards resumes: "One thing that we do agree (with Cheney) about is the need to be offensive in going after terrorists. A good defense is a good offense . . . John Kerry made clear on Thursday night . . . I'm sorry! I broke the rules (again) . . . WE made clear that we will do that and we will do it aggressively . . ." All told, a really polished performance. Not.
Cheney methodically dismantled Kerry and Edwards, piece by piece, especially their Senate records (although Edwards has yet to put in a full day in the Senate). If Edwards needed to show a sense of authority as the challenger, what he got was a paddling from a grown-up instead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The media says Cheney's performance last night freezes the race until Friday -- the next presidential debate.
And, admittedly, there's no way to sugar-coat it. The post-presidential debate debate about the debate last Thursday in Florida has been brutal -- really, really brutal on Bush. The press was smitten with Kerry's performance, especially the part where he vividly recounted his "extraordinary experience" of visiting Treblinka inside the KGB "underneath Treblinka Square" in Russia. (Next he'll tell us about Lubianka Square in Poland.) Demonstrating his depth and command of facts further, Kerry ended the Korean War a year before it ended when he spoke eloquently of the 'Armistice of 1952'. (See Mark Levin's, Slighting Substance.) In fairness to Kerry, CBS says they can vouch for Kerry's claim.
Just to give you an idea how smitten the press was at Kerry's debate performance, over at NEWSWEEK Bush's lead over Kerry was evaporated by smitten NEWSWEEK pollsters who changed the sample mix in their poll to favor Surging Kerry after their first post-debate poll showed Kerry not surging. After adding 64 Democrats and dropping 46 Republicans in their survey sample, the smitten pollsters reported Kerry had surged to a commanding lead of . . . 2 percent, 47%-45%. NEWSWEEK insists the Kerry Surge was real -- nothing to do with fudging the numbers. (And people sitting at home on weekends answering 200 stupid poll questions are not really morons.)
CNN was definitely among the smitten. The cable net put it this way: "Polls in late September showed (the President's) approval rating at almost 54 percent," so the "debates were seen as (his rival's) only remaining chance to close the big gap. In the first debate, (the Democratic challenger) was viewed as the more effective speaker and (the President) was said to have appeared tired and sometimes confused."
The challenger's "widely acclaimed performance boosted his standing in public opinion polls and generated much needed contributions to his campaign," CNN notes. The President, looking haggard and uninterested, stumbled over words repeatedly. Many said he looked unprepared and even affronted when challenged. A poll of debate viewers showed only 19% thought the President had won but 55% thought his rival had won. The debate, CNN further noted, was "seen as helping revive" the Democratic challenger's failing campaign."
Oops -- that 'Democratic challenger' was Walter Mondale and the 'haggard' President was Reagan. CNN was talking about the first Reagan-Mondale debate.
Interestingly, polls conducted immediately afterward showed Bush lost the first debate with Gore. Polls showed Bush lost the second debate with Gore -- and the third. So, naturally, Bush went on to win the election. Which means Bush's got two more debates to "lose", and he's a lock for reelection.
Of all the criticism leveled at Bush for not acting like a trained seal at the debate, the most amusing was the criticism that he looked too tired. Of course, Bush spent the day tending to the needs of hurricane victims and touring disaster areas. In fact, did you see that huge disaster area they showed on TV that night? Just horrific. With TV cameras panning, viewers could see debris strewn all over the place; something twisted into a pretzel by shifting winds . . . couldn't tell what it was, it was in the dark . . . oh wait -- that was a close-up of Kerry's position of Iraq.
After watching both debates, the one thing I do come away with is that Bush and Cheney make a heck of a tag team. And if this keeps up, it's Bush and Cheney in a landslide this November.
Anyway, that's...
My two cents
Outstanding debate analysis, John. You're always a great read--I noticed all the "replies to JohnHuang2" I've posted--and your assessment of the race as it stands and the post-debate spinning is clear and solid.
If any lurkers from the DUmmy site ever took the time to read this excellent article, their families would have them impounded and on a suicide watch. It makes just so much sense for a hardcore democrat to grasp.
John, that photoshop of putting Edwards in a baby stroller is great!!
Dutchess found that graphic of Edwards in the baby walker. Think a Freeper made that graphic but don't know who it was, maybe they'll see it and take credit for it. Whoever made it did a good job of capturing the essence of the debate last night. lol
I too am smitten! With you John Huang2! Another fabulouso Two Cents.
May I use part of your quote for my tagline?
Like Kerry, Edwards vowed to hunt down al-Qaeda wherever it is -- wherever it is! No matter where 'wherever' is, unless wherever's in Iraq
Say yes and I'll be your best friend. :-)
Great thread as always Aquamarine, thanks!
I try to come by and lurk when I can, don't have much time to do more than lurk but I always enjoy FR Finest!
Taking John's truncated quote for a tagline spin...
I hope John doesn't mind (John is such a nice guy he probably won't mind but I will understand and respect his wishes if he disagrees.) And I'd still offer my best friendship. :-)
Good morning, Miss Aqua ... thank you for JH2's exceptional Two Cents.
Mr. Huang2 ... just brilliant, from beginning to end ... you sliced 'em and diced 'em without mercy ... Kerry/Edwards, that is.
I am soooo looking forward to watching them cry while trying to put on a brave face during their concession speeches on Election Day, which I predict will be delivered about 5 minutes after the polls close.
Great job, John!
It is too bad that you are not working for Bush as a Speech Writer/Advisor for George W. Bush!
He would benefit greatly from your input. I just hope somebody on his campaign staff read the essay and take some of the zingers where it should fit!!
Becoming What We Are
Read: Philippians 3:1-11
The Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. —2 Corinthians 3:17
Bible In One Year: Isaiah 28-29; Philippians 3
At a British university, a group of students had raised the question, "What do you want to be?" Different answers were given—a champion athlete, an influential politician, a noted scholar. Shyly, yet clearly, one student said something that caused thoughtful silence: "You may laugh at me, but I want to be a saint."
Imagine—a saint! Whatever his concept of sainthood, many in our secular society would view that ambition as eccentric. Yet if we are Christians, it ought to be the highest priority of our life. The essence of sainthood is simply to be like Jesus. Paul said that the overarching purpose of God the Father is to make us like His Son (Romans 8:29).
Of course, every believer is guaranteed perfect conformity to Christ in the world to come. But God does not want us to wait passively until we enter heaven for that supernatural transformation to take place (1 John 3:2). We are to be cooperating with the Holy Spirit to grow more and more like Christ "in this world" (4:17).
Yes, we are already saints by faith in Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:1). But each day we face the challenge of becoming what we are—Christlike in every area of our lives. —Vernon Grounds
More like the Master I would live and grow,
More of His love to others I would show;
More self-denial, like His in Galilee,
More like the Master I long to ever be. —Gabriel
To belong to Christ is to be a saint; to live like a saint is to be like Christ.
I agree 100%.
I will stick by my prediction 60/40 but change for nadar effect.
56% for President Bush!
Beautiful job!
