The HTML Campfire

Gather 'round one and all. New or old, it doesn't matter.
All that should matter is a willingness to have, what may or may not be considered, knowledge bestowed upon anyone willing to learn how in the world all this cool looking stuff happens 'round here.
Let's get started...

Line Break: <br>
When you type <br> at the end of a line of text
This is what happens.

New Paragraph: <p>
When you type <p> at the end of a line of text

This is what happens.

These you need to turn something "on" and "off".

Bold "on" = <b> Bold "off "= </b>
Typing in:
<b>Bold</b> no more bold
Looks like:
Bold no more bold

The rest work the same way

Italic: <i></i>
Italic

Underline: <u></u>
Underline

Strikeout: <s></s>
Strikeout

Center: <center></center>

Center

The recently popular, Superscript:
th, st, rd

Subscript:
th, st, rd

Nothing to it right?
Now these require you to enter what you want between the " and ".

Font Size: <font size="?"></font> (?=font sizes; 1-7)
1234567

Font Color: <font color="the color name"></font>
Black
White It's White, trust me it's there (highlight it with your pointer)
Red
Green
Blue
Cyan
Purple
Orange
Yellow
Brown

These rquire you to enter where you want to go between the " and ".

How to post a picture: <img src="?"> (?=the address of the picture)
In this case the picture address is: http://www.freerepublic.com/images/frlogo.gif (It's from the FR home page)
<img src="http://www.freerepublic.com/images/frlogo.gif"> =

Links are a 2 step process. Where you want to go and something for the pointer to "click" on.
Link Something: <a href="?">??</a> (?=the address of the page, ??=something to "click" on)
In this case the page address is: http://www.freerepublic.com/home.htm (the FreeRepublic "home" page)
<a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/home.htm">(the FreeRepublic "home" page)</a> the </a> turns off the link. =
(the FreeRepublic "home" page) the </a> turns off the link.

Here is another HTML tip...

A REALLY SUPER~ GREAT~ FANTASTIC ONE!

CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT!!!!!

I am not sure how other people do it (cheat, I mean)...

But when I am doing something BIG that requires a LOT of formatting, I open up my Outlook Express (I know, some hate it and call it a virus...but it is what I use...)  Anyway...open up Outlook Express and:

  1. Click on view
  2. make sure the source/edit thing has a check by it..if not, click on it
  3. open up a new message
  4. TYPE AWAY..
  5. After you have typed, look at the bottom of the screen for the tab "Source" click on it...you will automatically see you  "message" converted FOR YOU into HTML
  6. Copy this...and paste it into your FR post...
~Add whatever you want...links will turn into links...cut and pasted pictures (not hotlinked of course) will automatically be right...and all of the other nifty formatting available will work AUTOMATICALLY!!!!

Kind of a long process if you just want a little formatting...but if it is a BIG JOB and you are not a GURU...it is AWESOME!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Your blink works in Firefox and I think also on Netscape.

Really? I tried to fake out the browser, and it still didn't work on my end - but I'm running "Konqueror" in Linux, so it must have a squelch on it.

Congratulations on receiving my big red blink!!

Curses! No blink!! Goodbye, Blink, you were my evil, evil friend.

It's your browser probably.
Your "blink" does blink on my Netscape browser, but not on my Internet Explorer.

Now my only problem is getting them from the web. I don't know how to convert web photos from bitmap to jpgs. I'll try resizing next.

Go to Windows, Accessories and OPEN the program called PAINT. Within PAINT, OPEN your bitmap image. SAVE AS file type JPEG. Done.

I get the red blinking using Firefox 1.0PR but not under IE 6. Yet another reason to abandon Internet Exploder!

As you know, there have been html threads in the past with lots of good info, but the threads are long and not easy to use.
What do you think about a short, concise page of basic stuff that's linked from the "Post Reply" pop up box?

If I might offer a suggestion...I have been using this IrfanView ('graphics Swiss army knife program') for a 'while' - nearly every day for SOMEthing or other having to do with images. (View and convert images, crop, resize, color balance, thumbnails, create html thumbnail pages for the web, to name just a few.)

It's Very easy to use, and highly rated by all the download sites and, although it's DEFINITELY WORTH a LOT more...IT'S STILL FREE for the download! (The author gratefully accepts 'contributions', of course, but he really DOES give it away free.)

Last time I looked (downloaded), the program itself was less than 1mb, and I think the 'plug-ins' file (which you'll also need to get) was just above 1mb... so the whole thing is about 2mb or so total - not a big deal even without broadband - and the program is PACKED with features.

Check it out (or download) at the above link... or just google 'irfanview' to see what everyone else says about it... I absolutely think it's worth your time to take a look.

Good Luck,
SeadogBytes

RE: "Next you want to set up a web page storage site, and
FTP your pics there for future use. Some sites are:
Photodump.com
Photobucket.com
Both do not require an FTP program, others might."

http://www.imageshack.us/ (...Note that it's ".us" NOT ".com") is another one that I have used, which seems to work okay.
