The issue of what Kerry brought with him to the podium is not a petty one. A candidate who had simply a list of talking points on paper would be at a huge advantage vs. the other participant who played by the rules.
Based on the most recent reports here, it sounds as if even Fox News is about to forget and drop the issue, since they've declared that they're 99% certain the object in question is a pen.
It's hard to fathom what's going on here, unless they're viewing an incomplete clip of what took place. For even the low-resolution copies of the event that are posted online make it blatantly clear that, yes, he had a PEN (OBJECT 1) in his RIGHT hand, but he also removed a LIGHT-COLORED RECTANGULAR OBJECT (OBJECT 2) from inside his jacket with his LEFT hand. He then handles the object in a fashion that suggests UNFOLDING, and places it on the deck of the podium.
As mentioned already, I am a digital forensics examiner. I have a state-of-the-art forensic video system. I have briefly examined the low-resolution clips of the event, and at first impression, OBJECT 2 appears to be a folded sheet or sheets of light-colored paper. It is DEFINITELY rectangular. It is DEFINITELY light-colored. And it is DEFINITELY distinct and separate from OBJECT 1.
I would very much like to examine a high-resolution version of the clip; ideally this will be an uncompressed digital video file digitized from a digital broadcast master. If anyone has any connections or access to one of the networks or C-SPAN or whatever, and can obtain said file, it would be immensely helpful.
This is about playing by the rules, folks. I for one am sick and tired of sitting back and watching the rules broken without consequence. It is high time to hold people accountable. That applies to the candidates and the media, whether the media member in question is CBS or Fox News Channel. If it's wrong, it's wrong. And if they're reporting that Kerry brought nothing but a pen to the podium, THEY'RE WRONG.

I am writing the Presidential Debate Commission. Does cheating mean nothing to them? What are they, the UN of Presidential Debates?
"Rush argued that they already "got away" with this...."
A typical reaction from RHINO's (All who do not support our country and its laws are one!). This must not be allowed to stand. RULES ARE RULES!! Traitors do not follow rules.
Go down to your local FOX affiliate & ask them to give you a look at the network feed.
I disagree with Rush on this. That is like saying " ah , so what, if you kids cheat on your test"...."you already got away with it, so just keep the " A"!!!" Where in the world is the integrity our country claims to be founded on!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, it's nonchalant, casual, and slick.
Another freeper in one of the other threads did a nice job of using a find-edges filter that clearly ID'd the pen in his right hand.
MM
Sure.
Thank you very much for your work on this. I disagree with some posters who think it is not important or will backfire. The 'Rats are used to getting away with cheating; if caught, they merely lie with impunity, and attack the credibility of the person pointing out the truth! It is time that some of it starts sticking to them.
Not to criticize, just as a point of clarification (for those who will be making calls and writing letters and should not have their credibility reduced by terminology): the big piece of furniture behind which the speaker or lecturer stands is a lectern, not a podium. I.E. Kerry took something out of his pocket and placed it on the lectern. The podium is the raised platform that speakers stand on, with their feet, hence the "pod-".
The mask has been removed from the MSM...
...and it ain't pretty.
First let me say that the FReepers are a great bunch of people. Of course they are, they are conservatives. But you see that poses a problem from the get go. As conservatives we tend to be independent, free thinking, to take matters into our own hands, to lead rather than follow. When you have a house full of such people there are bound to be those that disagree with what you are doing, which is fine, but I think it would do us all well to keep in mind that some of us do one thing well, some of us do another thing well and we need to have respect enough for each other to allow each person to do what it is that he or she does well or is able to do.
I agree that there are issues far more important than a cheating Presidental Nominee, however, the implications of a cheating President are pretty profound when you think about it and it IS important, and it needs to be acknowledged and addressed.
Of course it is not going to change the outcome of the debate, and probably not the outcome of the election, but in the circles that believe in right and wrong, we believe that Kerry needs to PERSONALLY acknowledge what he did and apologize to President Bush, the debate committee and the people.
No one can be allowed to think that they are above the rules. I am not, you are not and he should not be either.
I feel like, if he is not then why the hell should I be?? It would make my life a whole lot easier!!
B...but it doesn't matter if Kerry lies, cheats, steals, or puts American lives at risk now or by his past actions. The only thing that matters is that Kerry wins. This is it, bottom line, take it to the bank. The idiot MSM brigade is shouting this from the rooftops. Bush is to be smeared any way, any how, anytime. Kerry gets a first class pass for everything, and that's the way it is. Period. The front page on every news magazine, liberal newspaper all the same. Kerry debate bounce! Gleeful expression.
Well, Cheney will eat Edwards' lunch tomorrow, and the MSM will act as if A: That never happened. B: It doesn't matter. And C: Cheney cheated, lied, and was mean or looked mean. Big bounce for Edwards/Kerry since Cheney/Bush aren't allowed to appear mean, mention France in denigrating tones, say anything of substance, or call Edwards/Kerry on their lies.
What we can do to counteract this nonsense is to say to everyone...Did you listen to what Kerry/Edwards said? What they plan to do if elected? Invariably, the answer is Uh, no. Then we bring up tax hikes, big ones, lots of them. Tax breaks gonzo. Tax rebates fini. Mandatory military service with help to pay college costs. This is the old bait and switch tactic. The money won't be there to pay for college costs. We'll be busy paying for meals on wheels for Sudan, Haiti, the rest of Africa, and any other nation or group of people with minority status. And of course, Hill's plan for educating the entire world and universal health plan...socialized medicine, etc.. People with children are worried that Kerry isn't going to protect this country. Well, we have to ask the UN and France if it's okay.
Its OK, he didn't cheat, he just "took it out of his pocket before he put it in his pocket which was after the debate officials put it on the podium before they didn't put it on the podium"....or something like that
I can answer that question more definitively later, but on first review, the object behaves like a folded piece of paper, not a handkerchief.
MM
Every time Edwards opens his mouth he is going to spew Halaburton:/ PUKE
.....the circles that believe in right and wrong, we believe that Kerry needs to PERSONALLY acknowledge what he did and apologize to President Bush, the debate committee and the people.
AMEN!!!! You said it well!!
5. Rules Applicable to All Debates
(d) Notwithstanding subparagraph 5(c), the candidates may take notes during the debate on the size, color, and type of paper each prefers and using the type of pen or pencil that each prefers. Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper, pens, and pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff of the Commission will place such paper, pens, and pencils on the podium, table, or other structure to be used by the candidate in that debate.
Rules is rules and breaking them is cheating.
