Presidential Candidate section of the Michigan Absentee ballot (UPDATE: No hoax, small exposure

I'm posting this because I feel it should be seen, and because I know many people here are going to vote absentee for this upcoming election.

Here is a picture of Presidential Candidate section of the Michigan Absentee ballot, and if you take a look, you might notice something VERY wrong.

>

Now, if you look at that, notice how the arrows on the presidential candidates are not aligned....an arrow is left over at the end (pointing to the "Congressional" header), and Bush's name has no arrow. It would appear that the arrows are misaligned by having been moved too far downward.

Provided that you vote for the first arrow (next to Kerry), could this potentially mean that, because the arrows seem to be moved downward, that the arrow next to Kerry's name would actually be a vote for Bush? That someone who doesn't notice this and votes for Kerry would have their vote counted for Bush/Cheney?

To anyone else who has gotten an absentee ballot, is yours the same? Because if it is, this is very serious, and needs to be reported to the County Clerk's/whatever office. Just though I'd share.

Calling the Democrat party the Democratic party is one of my life-long peaves. Has anyone ever used the term Republicanic party? Is John Kerry a Democratic? Sheesh.

Thank you. This is a pet peeve of mine, too. At least we should be able to cure our own from this habit. It gives 'rats a respectability they hardly deserve.

This ballot is from one precinct in Alma, MI. 69 (that's not a joke) absentee ballots were mailed out before the error was brought to the clerk's attention. Replacement ballots have been ordered and will be mailed to the voters who received misprinted ballots.

AND THIS

That's my ballot

Hi, I have an LJ account, but I'm not really involved in the community. A friend posted this in LJ somewhere. I'm originally from Gratiot Co. and am registered to vote there, but I live in AA. That's the ballot I received on September 29th. I called the company as soon as I saw the error, and received a call from Barbara Gager (city clerk) early the next morning. Apparently, it only affects a small number of ballots, but evenso, it's a fairly grievous error.

" Apparently, it only affects a small number of ballots,"

Famous last words, and not to be believed.

Good Lord, people, it's a HOAX.

And even if it wasn't, if you actually look at the ballot, anyone voting for Kerry would be casting a vote for Bush instead. That's how it would scan.

Someone over on DU posted this on Friday. They called the Michigan elections office and they said it's a photoshop hoax.

I'll be checking Captains Quarters (original source) to see if any more is known about this. He is not usually taken in by something like this, so I'll hold an opinion for more defnitive information.

I hope I wasn't a pawn in spreading disinformation.

If anyone learns more about this, please post and add/correct posting. I'll be out of town on business and not able to follow closely. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Should we put "Possible Hoax" in the title, to avoid any confusion?

It could be an innocent mistake, but it definitely creates the impression that Bush is not an option.

We just need to be careful - if it is real, the info will be outed, but if it's not, we want to make sure we don't spread something far and wide that later turns out to be false... FR is increasingly in the "public eye", and I'm sure we'd all love to maintain our new-found serious role as a player in the new media ;0)

I agree wholeheartedly. I check Captains Quarters pretty regularly for updates, and have seen none. The Live Journal site does seem a little "out there".

Have e-mailed Admin, and will watch for corrected title.

Thanks again.

Take this for what it's worth, but Google led me here

"From Brad Wittman in the Michigan Secretary of State's office: Thanks for the sites. The ballot printing error is confined to a single precinct in the City of Alma. Approximately 69 ballots containing the error were released to voters on Monday, September 27. On Tuesday, September 28, a voter called the clerk to alert her to the error. Arrangements have been made to send the 69 voters replacement ballots. The clerk expects to receive corrected ballots on Monday, October 4. In the meantime, a voter who received one of the misprinted ballots posted a scan of the ballot on the web. This has created far more interest (an outrage) than what is warranted. It seems weird that each precinct would print its own ballots, but who knows? I hope the printers & election officials in the other precincts / counties are a little more careful... ?
