There was an article today in the Olympian, Olympia, Washington's newspaper, regarding concern about about a large BC 2004 campaign sign hanging at an overpass adjacent to Fort Lewis. I could not post the original article due to copyright restrictions so I decided to Vanitize it.
The overpass in question is on exit 122 over Interstate 5 where FReepers and Operation Support Our Troops (OSOT) members stand together as Patriots to acknowledge the sacrifices and brave service of America's troops. The same overpass where we gathered for our March Against Terror on 9/11/2004.
The author of this article begins by saying that, "Apparently bumper stickers are not enough." It gives you an idea of where her loyalties lie. Complaints have been filed with the Washington State Patrol demanding that the sign be removed because it is a distraction for drivers and presents a safety hazard. That's a fair concern but it doesn't stop there.
Would a Kerry-Edwards sign be okay? According to a State Patrol lieutenant who has received the complaints, she can tell by the tone of those calling that they are dismayed by the Bush-Cheney sign and they are not supporters of the President.
A state worker who commutes along I-5 reportedly said the following:
"It leaves the impression in people's minds that this is the only party that supports the troops," said Blackledge, who described herself as a Democratic supporter. "They're drawing a parallel for people while they're driving down the street. That's not cool."
Well I'm sorry lady but my first rally there was to counter Rats like yourself who had organized in 2003 to mock and protest members of the 81st Brigade as they reported for duty upon being activated for Iraq. The area was thick with the UN flag wavers wearing their Howard Dean attire; their futile attempts to drape Old Glory with those asinine blue banners. The issue over who supports the troops has been settled. I'm not a frequent rallier but I don't think you would be unwelcome if you stopped by, maybe bring the stars and stripes and said "thank you" to a few brave soldiers. So get your arse up there if you're so concerned about it. OSOT has been good about keeping the campaigning to a minimum.
Oh, I almost forgot about the BC 2004 sign! Troopers dispatched to complaints about the sign can't seem to be able to locate the dastardly distration upon their arrival. It seems that it just disappears and pops up elsewhere! The State Patrol lieutenant says it's a good game of cat and mouse. I'm inclined to think that the sign may not be all that visible to certain State Troopers. Wink, wink...
For the author: bumper stickers are just a start.
Ping for the PS chapter
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition--even on Bainbridge Island and the People's Republic of Washington.
If it's on a public bridge, then it's within a public right-of-way. This is illegal where I live, unless you have a permit from whatever governmental unit controls the right-of-way.
Yes, it's illegal in WA too. Politics, not safety, appears to be the main motivation to complain about the signage
How has Kerry supported the troops? Name one.
Hmmm...liberals to this ALL THE TIME on Interstate 89 bridges in the People's Republic of Vermont (spit!). Guess when the shoe is on the other foot, they get pissy.
There were Kerry signs on several interstate overpasses in the Detroit area on my daily commute. After several days, I sent an angry email to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Got an email back from them saying: "MDOT is not behind those signs being illegally erected on freeway overpasses. We have contacted the Michigan Democratic Party to have them removed". Next day they were gone.
Shotokan BTTT! LOL Police Officers may need new glasses :)
Actually, in all the time I have been there on Outpost 122 I have seen no signs hanging over the edge of the railings. Early on we were asked not to do so and complied. Not only that, it is a reasonable request. Anything that fell downward onto on-coming freeway traffic could cause a devastating accident.
If it is a Bush/Cheney sign, it may be newbies/campaign supporters who know no better. It was not the Bridge Regulars. Today, when I was on the Bridgeport overpass holding a Dino sign, the organizer had big ones with rope to tie them on the railings. I explained that no, he could not do so and why not. I also said Dino would NOT appreciate any signs being hung illegally. Most people just don't know, and are not trying to do something bad. (Unlike the rats who go to "Ruckus School" to learn how to scale buildings and hang themselves off bridges etc.)
Sounds like this sourpuss Democrat just wants to stir up trouble. And I agree with you, Shotokan - she should simply get her "arse" over there to support the troops and quit her whining. Believe me, the troops already know who truly supports them LOL
BYW The bridge Regulars have been allowed to have our tall American flags anchored - but made certain they were on the far ends of the over pass, not directly over the cars.
Great vanity! Thanks for all you do and your eyesite, which is quite good :)
Just trying to help....... ;o)
LOL That didn't even occur to me. Thanks for the quick thinking, SW! Of course I am speaking of the wonderful Dino Rossi - our next Washington State Governor :)
Once we had 8000 people on 4 overpasses here in WA. And we have had from 30-100 at Outpost 122 EVERY Saturday since the WOT began. Of course, it is the entry to the military base so no one tells us to take down our American flags :) The base commanders love because the troops love us! he he he
