I do not see the angle where Kerry "won" at all. Sorry.
I wonder if Kerry had the questions before tonight.
Feeling sick to my stomach.
kerry cant make himself something he is not, a strong leader he is a phony and people can see and sense that. let him "win" 1000 debates. people can see the Presidents heart.....kerry doesnt have one.
The article is headlined, "Kerry Still Holds Lead.." but the survey results don't show that Bush lost anything. How can Kerry hold a lead he doesn't have?
Here is my quick read on the poll results...termed in an advantage or disadvantage for Bush.
Two BIG Bush negatives:
Which candidate expressed themselves clearly? -28
Do you feel more favorable for one of the candidates? -25
Now for the positives:
Agrees with you? +3
More believable? +5
Fair criticism of his opponent? +5
More likable? +7
Tough enough for job? +17
Of course, these are flash polls. How the campaigns handle the coming days is important.
I always knew we'd hear how "John Kerry won this debate!" as soon as it was over. The press is SO predictable!
the problem is putting your views on that of a swing voter.
most swing voters respond to attacks on candidates, but not when done by the other candidate directly. It looks mean. Bush had openings but didn't take them precisely for this reason - maybe that's why he was feeling frustrated. ut john kerry did. He attacked bush in ways that turn off most swing voters. Bush took it and remained generally affable. Probably as close as he could have gotten to the 'there you go again' tone of reagan considering the pinhead he's up against.

If it can be proven that he did have the questions illegally then he would lose.

I pray that if he did cheat he is smoked out of his weasel hole.
If you look at the details, they thought Kerry "won" but they agreed with Bush's positions and Bush came out ahead on best handling all these issues. I believe Bush was up by 20 on who is tough enough to lead war on terror. So I think "won" means something stylistic to the viewers, not substantive.
The Global Test phrase will come to haunt Kerry. I think Cheney will annilhate Edwards when they debate and actually increase Bush's lead in the foreign policy arena.
People also thought Gore won the first Bush-Gore debate.
Still, I think the President was a little flat in the middle. On the other hand, he started the first Bush-Gore debate a little flat, too. In the end, he picked up steam in the following debates when and where it counted.
Plus, importantly, the real decision on a debate takes a day or so to shake out. People filter in the commentary by the candidates for the next day or so after a debate. There will be responses from the outside to expand on some of the points where the format didn't lend itself to further expansion.
Bush wins post debate on "More Likeable", "Agrees with you more on the issues you care about", "Demonstrated he's tough enough for the job", and "More Beliveable".
Seems to me that Kerry didn't make a dent.
In boxing, an opponent trailing a champ, has to score a KO to win the bout. He might land alot of blows on the champ, but without the KO, the champ keeps the crown.
Prior to the debate, Bush was way ahead on points regarding the Iraq situation. Kerry landed alot of punches on the president, but no KO.
One word of explanation here...this is not a total favorability rating...it is a "do you feel more or less favorable than before?" question...I hope that clears it up a bit.
if you believe this poll (and flash polls are questionable), the public believes that Kerry won on technical debating, Bush won on the intangibles.
I have no opinion at the moment because I did not watch it.
Me, too... still waiting on that to happen with the CBS Rathergate...
Kerry looked better than Bush. He was more polished. But the only one who said stupid things was Kerry. The "global test" thing was particularly stupid.
kerry won on style and nimbleness--Bush won on substance and character
Give it a day or two and the fluff will wear off. Reason and logic will prevail..
