TRAPPE, Md. - John Eisenhower, son of Republican President Eisenhower, said in a newspaper column this week that he will vote for Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) for president on Nov. 2. In a rare public announcement, Eisenhower said he switched his party affiliation from Republican to independent after 50 years after losing confidence in his former party. He said Kerry has demonstrated courage, competence and a concern for tackling the "widening socio-economic gap in this country."

Eisenhower's disillusionment with GOP fiscal and economic irresponsibility is certainly understandable.
But it is unfortunate that he views Kerry as the only available alternative.
It'd be better if he had adhered to his "independent" declaration, either supporting a third party candidate or perhaps offering an explanation for boycotting this year's major party offerings by voting "none of the above".
Nicely done!
I saw David & Julie on Larry King in 2000 and I was impressed. I remember thinking that Julie would have been First Lady now if President Nixon had had his way. He tried hard to pair her up with a certain handsome Guard member but the relationship didn't 'take'. That would have been a great political dynastic marriage and Julie would have made an excellent First Lady. However George W fell head-over-heels with a beautiful and elegant librarian and we are very happy to have sweet Laura in the White House. She's done a wonderful job for the past 4 years.
Sound a lot like a socialist to me!
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS NOT THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY;NOT NOW,NOT EVER!
And for people to call those not conservative "enough",RINOs,is a misuse of that therm.
Ike,as I stated earlier, was more or less apolitical, but when both the Dems and the GOP wanted him as their presidential candidate,he went with the GOP. Yes, he consider the GOP to be his party and was a REPUBLICAN.
Ike "stole" the election from Taft? What alternate universe do YOU live in? Nobody,NOBODY, was going to beat Ike in those two elections. The tenor of the times were such, that Ike was "it".
Are you trying to imply that Nixon attempted to set an ENGAGED or MARRIED Julie up with W? WHEN?
Nixon tried to set up Tricia,Julie's older sister up with Prince Charles. That didn't take.
This guy's a loon and it shows that greatness usually skips a generation or two.
If Ike was "apolitical" but ran as a Republican, then doesn't that make him a perfect case in point RINO?
Don't use the term RINO,when what you really are trying to say,is that someone wasn't/isn't a Conservative.
Isn't RINO the term generally given to Republicans who are not conservatives and by word and deed undermine conservatism? Eisenhower rarely challenged the Democrats on any issue, and I would argue his weakness as a party leader played a part in the GOP losing their Congressional majority in 1954.
Eisenhower named Earl Warren and William Brennan to the U.S. Supreme Court (though in fairness Ike regretted doing so). Still, you can see how it happened. Ike was a RINO and he appointed a RINO (Warren) was Chief Justice. And Brennan was a Democrat.
I just looked it up. It's in Bill Minutaglio's "First Son" decent biography. He says it was Tricia but I thought I've read about it elsewhere in good biographies as Julie? Maybe my memory is faulty.
Nixon sent a private plane to get George W for a special date with one of his daughters in 1969 when he was in the National Guard on base in Georgia. Minutaglio says:
"Of course, word even went all the way back to Houston. His friends there knew that he hated the entire episode, hated being forced to endure that long plane ride to Washington.' We went to dinner. It wasn't a very long date,' was all that Bush would ever say"
You've been a member of FR,for all this time, and STILL don't know this?
Look, the GOP is NOT the CONSERVATIVE PARTY;it just isn't! Republicans come in all stripes and always have done! And no,there is NO "Conservative Party";not even the fringe parties!
Since Ike felt more "at home" in the GOP,was a self proclaimed Republican,he WAS a Republican! Was he a Conservative? No,not a hard core one,and he never claimed to be one.
And many career military clothe themselves in the " apolitical" mode. They have to take orders from the president, which NO party owns forever.
Ike was NO RINO and you shouldn't use terms, the definitions of which, you have less than no idea of.
Julie Nixon, and David Eisenhower were CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS. IIRC,and I usually do,they dated throughout college and were even engaged when they were in college.I DO know, for a certitude, that Julie married David PRIOR to her father's inaugural.I WATCHED whatever was shown of the wedding (which wasn't much, since she did NOT want it to be anything at all like the public show the Johnson girls made)on T.V. and read the wedding announcement in the N.Y. Times! Ergo.........IF you read this in a book, the author is a moron, who had his/her "facts" completely and utterly, damned, dead wrong. :-)
I did some online searching and it does look like it was Tricia not Julie, after all. I remember Tricia vaguely from that time. She was the blonde beauty who had the Rose Garden wedding. I also remember that Nixon did try to fix her up with Prince Charles too. Lucky for her that one didn't work out.
I'd like to see another Rose Garden wedding if Jenna or Barbara would oblige. There hasn't been a First Daughter wedding there since Tricia Nixon.
No, Minutaglio had it right. It was Tricia not Julie. It was my memory at fault as I hadn't re-read that book in a while.
I did think very well of Julie & David Eisenhower in that Larry King interview in 2000. Both the Nixon daughters' marriages have lasted a long time, which is commendable.
Ike stole the nomination from Taft, who was far more conservative the Ike.
As for the Republican party being the conservative party, it is the conservative party when you compare it to the Democratic party.
BREAKING NEWS:
Holtz, son of a City of Paso Robles street painter, is going to vote for Bush!
My point is who care about a politicians son, or the son of a street painter. The guy could be a complete idiot. But somehow its news.
Holtz

Trica was a beautiful girl, but Julie wasn't ugly;just eclipsed by her older sister.Julie had the brains, though, and still has.
Let's do EVERYTHING in our collective power to keep the Clintons out of the White house,as I do begrudge Chelsea a White House wedding!
Yes,the GOP is considered to be the more conservative of the two major parties;however, that does NOT make the GOP THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY,where moderates and Conservative, but not as Conservative as YOU want them to be,aren't also members in good standing.
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!
Trica's son, Chris Cox was at the GOP Convention,in N.Y.C. and one talking head (I don't remember who) said that he wants to enter politics.
Ike was a write in candidate in NH and by-passed the normal procedures of being nominated.
The Conservative wing of the GOP, which was the dominant part of the Party would have likely rejected him had he gone through the normal nominating process.

I never said the Party would be as conservative as I would like it to be, but it should at least be guided by certain fundamental conservative principles (smaller gov't, individual responsibilty, U.S. sovereignity etc).
Maybe it would be a good idea to ease back on the caffine?
