Arizona Poll: Bush leads 53%-38% - race nearly over pollster says

PHOENIX -- President Bush has a lead in Arizona that is probably insurmountable over Democratic challenger John Kerry, according to a newly released statewide poll. The latest survey shows Kerry running 11 points behind Bush with only five weeks left in the campaign. And among those most likely to cast ballots this year, the president's lead hits 15 points -- with only 8 percent undecided.

"I've never seen anybody overcome that kind of a lead in Arizona,'' said pollster Bruce Merrill who conducted the survey within the last week for KAET-TV, the Phoenix PBS affiliate. "I think it's awfully close to being over in Arizona,'' he added, pointing out that Bush has had strong numbers here for months.

"It ain't over till Elizabeth Edwards sings"

It seems she and Hillary have a fondness for pantsuits, and I just wonder what it is they have against pantsuits?
Besides excess flesh and claves that have probably graduated to full grown cows by now that is...

uh oh...Did I type that out loud?

Elizabeth Edwards with Teresa Heinz Kerry (this was evidently the most flattering picture they could take)

"why isn't New Mexico akin to Arizona? Are the demographics different? Population?"

Another of those oddities about America ...

Both states have strong mining and ranching communities.

Both states have strong Native American influences -- large reservations, cultural influences (e.g., casinos)

Arizona distinghishes itself as a haven for retirees -- places like Sun City. It also has a strong defense industry with companies in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tucson. It also is the home of 1/2 of Major League Baseball's spring training. Finally, Barry Goldwater conservatism is a very strong influence, still, in Arizona.

New Mexico is more rugged, more mountains, and fancies itself as a haven for the creative. Its retirees do not flock to huge subdivisions like those in Sun City but to lonely mountain retreats. Lots of artists like NM because of places like Taos.

The race is nearly over everywhere, and, yes, I plan to keep working. But let's all get real: Kerry is sinking like a stone. The Dems will give him ONE DEBATE to try to right the ship, then they will yank the $ for their senate candidates.

Maybe more new agey people In NM?

We have our share but they are concentrated more up north. Sedona is one of the harmonic convergence locations, you know, LOL!

NM has a MUCH MUCH smaller border with Old Mexico and doesn't have to deal with the numerous problems therefrom.

You mean Barry Goldwater in his younger years. He died way more liberal thanks to his young liberal wife.

I think of us more as Reagan Republicans.

The University of Arizona, using $27,500 of student government funds has arbitrarily agreed to sponsor Michael Moore (yes that Michael Moore) for an on campus "speech" during the beginning of October. No provision has been made for equal time for a conservative (American) speaker.

If you have any thoughts on this matter, please email the university president plikins@email.arizona.edu
