'Oh my god! He's coming. Please help me. I am going to die. He has killed my son'
By Stewart Payne (Filed: 29/09/2004)
For 16 minutes a woman cowered inside a cupboard and pleaded for help in a harrowing 999 call as her estranged husband murdered their son in the driveway then made his way through the house, firing shots at random, as he hunted her down.
"Oh my god! Oh my god! He is coming. Please help me. I am going to die," Julia Pemberton told the operator.
Alan Pemberton killed his wife, Julian, and son, William A transcript of the 999 call was read out at an inquest in Reading yesterday into the deaths of Mrs Pemberton, 47, her son William, 17, and her estranged husband Alan, 48. All three died at the £1 million family home in Hermitage, Newbury, Berks, last November.
The inquest heard that Mrs Pemberton had been subjected to years of "sexual, financial and emotional" intimidation by her husband, culminating in him making death threats when she told him she wanted to end their marriage.
He moved out, but Mrs Pemberton continued to fear for her safety. She obtained a court injunction against him and reported her concerns to police.
Pemberton had arrived at the family home after playing a solitary game of golf, ostensibly to take his son for a driving lesson. But he began hammering on the front door and William went out to try to calm his father.
Laura Pemberton at the inquest in Reading The couple's daughter, Laura, 20, who was away studying at Cambridge university was at the inquest yesterday with other members of her family as details of the triple shooting were revealed. She sobbed as the transcript of her mother's final call was read out by Peter Bedford, the Berkshire coroner.
Mrs Pemberton tells the operator: "I am in Slanting Hill, Hermitage. I have got an injunction. My husband is out there with a gun and my son is there. He has a gun and he's let off some shots. I have an injunction, he is not supposed to come within 50 metres of the house."
The inquest heard that Mr Pemberton, a millionaire financial consultant, had dragged his wife out and shot her dead in the hallway. Then, using the same weapon he had earlier secretly removed from his girlfriend's gun cabinet, he turned it on himself.
It was more than six hours later that armed police decided it was safe to enter the house. An armour-plated Land Rover inched past William's body. He had been shot in the back as he tried to escape from his father.
After using a loud hailer and getting no response officers entered the house and found the bodies of Mr and Mrs Pemberton.
Mrs Pemberton made her 999 call at 7.11pm. It was relayed to Newbury police station but the control centre could not locate the new house on a map. Three unarmed officers were sent at 7.35pm. PC Graham Hadley saw William's body and went to give first aid while his colleagues kept watch. Finding the boy already dead, he then withdrew.
An armed response team was called, but had to travel from the neighbouring county of Oxfordshire. Unsure of whether Pemberton was still alive and armed, marksmen hid in bushes.
Sgt John Ottaway, one of the team, told the inquest in a statement that he asked for a police helicopter, tracker dogs and the armoured Land Rover, "but none were immediately available".
It was not until 1.20am the following day that the Land Rover arrived.
Following the killings there was criticism of the length of time it took police to respond and enter the house. But the coroner said his task was to determine how, when and where the victims had died, not to apportion blame.
However, the inquest was told that Mrs Pemberton had been subjected to years of "sexual, financial and emotional" intimidation by her husband, culminating in him making death threats when she told him she wanted to end their marriage. He moved out, but Mrs Pemberton continued to fear for her safety.
Although her domestic situation had been "logged", the officers called in response to her 999 call were not made aware of it, the inquest heard.
Despite her fears Mrs Pemberton had declined the use of a safe house and only later agreed to having a panic button installed.
Pemberton's girlfriend, Penny Cook, told the inquest that Pemberton had mood swings and was concerned about his wife's allegations.
On the morning of the killings she had left home leaving him in bed. After she was told of Pemberton's death she searched for the keys to a cabinet where she and her estranged husband kept guns for clay shooting. She could not find them and they were later recovered in Pemberton's car. She also found a farewell note Pemberton had written.
The inquest continues.
This is a lie, It never happened. They banned guns in England.
obviously the gun's fault.
Naturally, the Leftists will respond that there wasn't enough gun control! ...sort of like those ignorant fools in the 18th century who thought that patients only died because they weren't bled enough.
Just dial 999
STRIKE ONE
"control centre could not locate the new house on a map"
STRIKE TWO
"Three unarmed officers were sent"
STRIKE THREE
"Finding the boy already dead..."Too little, too late. Where is my torch and pitchfork?
I'll take a .44 magnum over a restraining order and 911 anyday.
The disarmed, cowed, Subjects of Britain have the government they have asked for.
Prayers for the victims.
easy way out....
It would seem like the easy way out, but I am sure it gets really really bad right after that.
He killed a kid and his wife, and killed himself. I really doubt he went out on a high note with the Creator.
Since your post addresses self-defense, guns, etc.. I have added it to KEYWORD: Banglist...
The Anti's ALL want this focused on "THE GUN" for their crusade.
SCREW THE GUN!
This wacko would have used whatever was available to do what he palnned. Obviously he was furious. Does anyone in the MSM enquire as to WHY he did this????
I'd sure like to read that report. But that's not the agenda driven story that serves any purpose, except maybe blatant news reporting.
"After using a loud hailer and getting no response officers entered the house ... "
I just love some of the Brit's verbage.
Still tryin' to figure out how a terlet got to be a loo.
Shotguns are not covered by the ban. You need a licence but they are not too hard to get.
Huh. The only thing an injunction is good for is to make it clear that it was a good shoot after you blow them away.
At least that is what the cops told me but they tend to have a rather practical point of view and prefer to have me alive then dead. The same, sadly can not be said for the police in some other locations who seem to prefer their citizens dead then able to defend themselves.
For your information yes this did happen. Have some respect for the family and friends that were left behind! The events that occurred that night are still painfull for everyone who knew, liked and loved Julia and Will.
In future have some respect
