(Flip-flop) Kerry denies owning Chinese assault rifle

A sportman's magazine's report that John Kerry owns a Chinese assault rifle is not true, the senator's presidential campaign contends.

As WorldNetDaily reported, Kerry, who has pushed for bans on so-called assault weapons, was quoted in the October issue of Outdoor Life responding to a Q&A presented to both leading presidential candidates.

"My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle."

But campaign spokesman Michael Meehan told the New York Times Kerry owns two guns, a double-barreled 12-gauge shotgun and a single-bolt-action military rifle, which he "keeps as a relic" and had never fired.

Outdoor Life claimed it had done an exclusive interview with the candidates, but Meehan said many of the remarks attributed to Kerry were from a questionnaire filled out by campaign staff.

The military rifle, which has no markings, came from a friend of Kerry's "years ago," Meehan said, noting rifles of that kind were first produced more than 100 years ago in Russia.

They commonly were used by North Korean and Viet Cong communists.

Meehan told the Times he was unable to ask Kerry about the rifle last week because of the senator's hoarse voice.

Kerry is a hunter who voiced support for the recently expired assault-weapons ban and often tells citizens he's never met anyone who wanted to use an AK-47 to shoot a deer.

Last week, Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the National Rifle Association, told the Times the comment in Outdoor Life made Kerry's support of the ban disingenuous.

''It's OK for John Kerry to own these kinds of firearms, but it's not OK for John Q. Public?'' Arulanandam said, adding Kerry could be subject to court-martial if the gun were brought home from the war as a souvenir. ''He certainly owes people an explanation as to why there's a double standard.''

He may have a point there-I myself prefer the old reliable M2-50 cal belt-fed for deer hunting since I'm not the best shot in the world. It does have several drawbacks like its tendency to knock down the trees around the deer beside being kind of bulky to lug around the woods.

Let's just see if we can get all the inaccuracies in the Chinese assault rifle story in some kind of order, John. I note there's more of them than there were in the CBS memos matter.

...my favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam...

So Kerry's 'favourite gun' is the one that jammed in a combat situation?

When Kerry's rifle jammed, he picked up an M-79 grenade launcher and fired a grenade at a nearby object.

...a single-bolt-action military rifle, which he "keeps as a relic" and had never fired...

This rifle is supposedly a gift from Kerry's friend. Here's the laws on guns-as-gifts, in Massachusetts:

Bringing the firearm back to Massachusetts, if he received it from a private party, would be a federal felony under the 1968 Gun Control Act. (5 years in prison, $5,000 fine, 18 USC §922)

...The military rifle, which has no markings...

Why does the rifle (presumably, a Moisin-Nagant) have no markings? It should have a serial number:

Whether it is Russian or Finnish, the serial number is found marked across the barrel shank, underneath the arsenal mark on Tulas & Tikkas (above the mark for Izhevsk).

The only examples of firearms with serial numbers removed of which I've heard would be 1. guns used by criminals, who hope to avoid their firearms being traced by the authorities, and 2. guns used by military personnel during covert operations, eg special forces in Laos during the Vietnam War.

...Meehan told the Times he was unable to ask Kerry about the rifle last week because of the senator's hoarse voice...

I cannot recall any other accounts of Kerry's 'hoarse voice' last week. As I recall he was making speeches and campaigning. If he he had a voice problem, why couldn't he have written a note to Meehan?

There are so many questions raised by this 'Chinese assault rifle' story. I am amazed and disappointed to see the way it appears to be dropping off the radar.

Okay. But why couldn't he have written a note, to Meehan?

The Chinese assault rifle doesn't belong to him. It belongs to his family.

Also,

after you hit the deer with the cal. .50 slug, the meat is no longer fit for human consumption.
