"Hey SE Mom, I'm in Winter Springs. "

I hear ya...but what I've seen driving around is trees like the one you noticed may appear fine one day- the next day a gust comes along and blows it over. Similarly, lots of our houses SEEM fine...but it won't take much wind to show that's not so.

The press is asking Jeb about those who refuse to evacuate. Remember the people in the mobile homes during Charley in Punta Gorda who did not evacuate when told to, and Jeb was supposed to force them and carry them out of their houses. Sheriff Beary of Orange County said "There is no remedy for foolishness."

The NHC guy said the eye is as wide as the swath of destruction from Charley. I am thinking I should have headed to Asheville.

...What's the political wind (no oun intended) down there? Are people growling about slow response...no response?...

No backlash against the government at all this time. I think Andrew taught the state a lesson.

Services after Frances were restored much quicker than w/Charley, near as I can tell.

Unfortunately, we're getting good at this stuff.

The political climate will depend heavily on State and Federal aid getting in there quickly, and effectively..

This could be a little more serious then that. There has been a lot of talk about a housing bubble over the last couple of years, and one has to wonder whether these storms may prove to be the pin that burst the bubble.

In the aftermath, as people clean up and pick up, the insurance rates will climb, and that much more stress will be loaded onto the system. A collapse in Florda's bloated real estate market, can underscore the achilles heal of the financial system, and lead to a further and broader weakening. So we can hope that care will be taken to protect lives and property, not only from the storm; but, also from the fallout of these storms.

I don't know about how FEMA in FL is working, but my encounters with them and the out of town utilities workers (hey Missouri power guys!), have been just great in Gulf Shores AL. Those FEMA workers bear the brunt of alot of frustrations and the ones I've seen bear it very compassionately. I also must give props to the National Guardsmen and the Gulf Shores PD. Much devestation down there.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those in Jeanne's path.

It's no fun living in the CONE OF UNCERTAINTY, meekie!

CONE AFTER CONE AFTER CONE. (I left plywood up from Ivan but my upstairs is vulnerable. I do have a shower curtain for the front windows upstairs if they blow out.)

Any slacking on that agenda could very well cost Bush the entire state in November..

Not to worry. Unlike hurricane Andrew in 1992, both FL Governor Jeb Bush and President Bush already have all the resources and paperwork already completed to get help to any areas affected by hurricane Jeanne as soon as possible. What made the problem with Andrew so bad was the fact that then-Governor Lawton Chiles delayed asking for Federal assistance, which really caused all kinds of problems for relief in the Homestead area.

mattdono in Gainesville, checking in.

I would mention that there is some good news coming out of this. Michael "I've-never-turned-away-from-a-cheeseburger-or-a-conspiracy-theory-I-could-get-my-hands-on" Moore was scheduled to speak at the University of Florida on Monday or Tuesday. I've heard that because of the hurricane, the thing was cancelled. And, he was going to get FREEPed anyway, but the less time that that scumbag spends inside my county and inside my city limits, the better.

Sorry Oxen! I just wanted you to be safe! I wonder how high the winds will get in Apopka/Zellwood? I think we lie on the east side of the track by just a hair.

That's too bad. I hope they have something covering their damage because it's the MOLD that moves counties to condemn properties. There are lots of on line sites regarding how to deal with mold. Also in today's paper: www.sptimes.com in the home section.

See my post # 92... & link attached..

Floridians need to take this seriously...
Proper structure for the weather conditions will cut insurance costs dramatically..

Insurance companies will often co-operate in rebuilding if they know the structure will probably never suffer from hurricane damages again..
Check out your insurance agent.. I am positive they have statistics and actually promote this type of structure in many areas..
Insurance companies want to collect premiums, not make payouts..
